Hey everyone! Welcome back to Wow! or Waste? Whether a whole collection has launched, or just a new product, I’m going to evaluate whether each product is either a Wow! buy or a Waste? of money, in terms of the price and the amount of product you get.
This time around we are evaluating the new Fenty Beauty Snap Shadows Collection, which releases on December 26, 2019.
The main theme of these palettes translates as minimal but customizable. Each palette has six shades that fit a certain theme, whether it be neutrals or pops of certain colour families. What makes these palettes almost “customizeable” is the fact that if you buy multiple palettes, you can “snap” them together to make your own custom palette. So far it is unclear to me as to how you actually “snap” them together (magnets? plastic pieces that could break with use?). In reality, I think this is a gimmick just to get you to purchase multiples instead of a single palette, but it is a creative idea. And this isn’t the first time we have seen Fenty include the ability to attach their products together, whether it be by magnets or other methods. Really, it’s a brilliant marketing ploy to encourage larger purchases, and I’m not hating on it (not yet at least).
So, let’s take a look at the different shades that these palettes come in, the product information and the value based on similar products on the market. If you are curious about whether these palettes are Wow! or Waste? please keep reading.
1 – True Neutrals
2 – Cool Neutrals
3 – Deep Neutrals
4 – Rose
5 – Peach
6 – Smoky
7 – Cadet
8 – Pastel Frost

Price and Quantity
These eyeshadow palettes are priced at $33 CAD ($25 USD) each and have 0.21 oz of product. You do get the small deal of $45 USD for a purchase of two palettes, saving you $5 or $2.50 each. Realistically, not big savings, but does further incentivize those who may already have been interested in purchasing multiples.
As far are mini palettes go, at first glance their price seems fairly comparable to other popular mini palettes, such as those from Huda Beauty. However, when you compare to many of the other smaller palettes offered at retailers like Sephora, a clear difference was the amount of product included, which had a large impact on value.
Here are the comparisons listed from best value to worst value:
|Quantity (oz)||Number of Shades||Cost-Quantity Ratio for 1 oz of product|
|1||Violet Voss Fun Sized Mini Palettes||$24||0.40||10||$60/oz|
|2||Viseart Theory Palettes||$60||0.78||6||$77/oz|
|3||Huda Beauty Obsessions||$37||0.34||9||$109/oz|
|4||Anastasia Beverly Hills Norvina Mini Pro Pigment||$38||0.32||9||$119/oz|
|5||Viseart Petit Pro||$40||0.28||8||$143/oz|
|6||Fenty Beauty Snap Shadows||$33||0.21||6||$157/oz|
|7||Urban Decay On the Run||$30||0.16||8||$188/oz|
|8||Natasha Denona Mini Eyeshadow Palettes||$33||0.14||5||$236/oz|
Wow! or Waste?
Looking at the other comparable products on the market, these do seem like a Waste to me. Honestly, there are a ton of smaller palettes on the market (and more are being launched every week) that can not only offer you a slightly wider shade selection in a still compact package, but also a smaller initial investment. Most smaller palettes right now offer a shade selection of 8-9 shades, which leaves 6 feeling a little scant. This is where their approach to upselling you into buying multiple palettes really works. Six isn’t quite enough shades for a real variety, so why not buy two palettes that can snap together?! I think it is a smart gimmick, but not one that I am falling for. It would be a different story if the palettes had inspiring or unique colour schemes, but to me they really don’t. They seem to be meant as staples, of which I have plenty.
Looking at value, this palette has a lot less product that other comparable products. Yes, I hear you, you aren’t planning on panning this eyeshadow palette. Maybe you have 10-20 other palettes like I do. I know, I know. HOWEVER, if there are only six shades, you might use it up faster than you might expect. I personally do pan eyeshadow palettes. Regardless of all this, the reason why I bring value into my assessment is the fact that I don’t really want to support brands who overcharge for a small amount of product, and think we won’t notice. It’s the principle of the thing. The reality is that these eyeshadow palettes have 60% of the product that Huda Beauty Obsessions palettes include, which are beloved by me. Yes, the Huda palettes are slightly more expensive, which perhaps accounts for the slightly higher price, but it is not proportional. I honestly think there are better options out there for you than these gimmick-ridden palettes designed to make you purchase with the mentality of minimalism, but with the actual result of you buying multiples.
Really, I think I have already said it all. Even if I have sounded negative in this Wow! or Waste?, I am truly curious about these products. I will be interested in swatching them in store, and who knows, maybe I will bite the bullet and purchase one or two anyways. I am skeptical of that happening since I am not familiar with the Fenty formula, but maybe it is amazing, and that is why the value isn’t as good. Are these premium products with a premium price? It’s possible.
In reality, a mini palette is a great way to try out a new eyeshadow formula, so this could be a great purchase if you are curious about the Fenty formula. So far it hasn’t been very popular, but there also haven’t been many shadow products released. If I were to entertain the thought of purchasing one or two of these, I think it would be between Smokey, Cool Neutrals and Cadet. Those are the most interesting colour schemes to me. But can I honestly say I don’t own anything like them? No. So again, I defer to the other better priced or better valued products on the market.
Are you planning on purchasing any of these palettes? Please let me know how you like them!
