If I could only recommend one… | Sephora Spring Sale

Hey everyone! It’s that time of year where every single person in the beauty community gives their unsolicited advice on what you should buy during the biannual Sephora sale! Over the years I have gone back and forth on whether it is worth it to shop the sale. Ultimately, it is a good opportunity to restock on old favourites, or to take a chance on something new! It is certainly a bonus that Rouge is getting 20% this time, where usually it is only 15% in the Spring!

This time for my recommendations I have decided to do it in a style that is a spin off of a tag I did almost a year ago now: The “If I could only keep one” tag that was originally created by Kelly Gooch on Youtube. So for today, I’m going to do a “If I could only recommend one…”, where I only recommend one product for each category of makeup. This way, I really have to be critical of my recommendations, making sure I only recommend the best of the best, in my opinion of course. You will notice, however, that I have not included products for all categories. To me, there are just some products that can’t beat the drugstore alternative, or I just haven’t settled on a favourite enough to wholeheartedly recommend it.

Tatcha Silk Canvas Primer

While I have only used a deluxe size of this primer, it was enough to wow me. I absolutely want to buy at least the mini of this primer. It glides on the skin easily, with only a small amount, and it reacted well with all of my complexion products. The overall result was that my skin looked noticeably smoother with this primer on. I don’t always use a primer because I don’t usually think it is necessary, and when I do I usually only use a pore-filling and mattifying one on my nose. But this primer had me using it daily and all over my face. The results were that noticeable and good.

Tarte Aquacealer Concealer

This is a concealer that I have been using for years and continue to purchase to this day. In fact, I’m going to restock during the sale. I have tried many other concealers, and they just don’t measure up. This is a very liquidy concealer that adds a good amount of hydration, but it also has pretty good coverage, around medium. I don’t deal with dark circles, but I do deal with dryness and this is the best concealer I have found so far to help mitigate that issue. Plus, you get a ton of product for the price, so the value is really good. You can read my original review here.

Finishing Powder

Hourglass Ambient Lighting Palette

Let me be clear that I think this is a great finishing powder, but not necessarily a setting powder. I prefer loose or matte pressed powders for setting my makeup, and finishing powders to add a bit more luminosity to the skin, and to help blend out other powder products on my face.

I am absolutely in love with this palette. The Hourglass finishing powders are very fine and I love how many different shades there are. This particular palette is really great because it includes a variety of shades that I find I actually use! I love the lighter powders for during the Winter months when I am my natural skin tone, and the more bronze powder for the summer. My favourite way to use these powders is with a big powder brush after I have applied my bronzer and blush. By lightly applying this powder all over the face, it helps further blend in your bronzer and blush to make the application look more natural, and lines less harsh. If you read my March Fave Five, you will have seen how much pan I have on this palette! I am basically needing to repurchase, and this baby ain’t cheap! I might have to do it though… I just love using it. It just finishes off your look perfectly.

Becca Sunlit Bronzer

This recommendation comes with a caveat… I haven’t technically used it. The dilemma I am facing here is that my favourite bronzers are the Becca Sunlit Gradient Bronzers that were released last summer, but were limited edition!!! Those bronzers contained different strips of bronzer from this bronzer line, the Sunlit bronzers, as well as strips of their highlighters. Why they didn’t make them permanent, I do not know. But ultimately I have used this formula through those, and it has great pigmentation, and gives a natural glowy look to the skin. I almost considered recommending the new Fenty bronzers here, but I have only been using the one I have for the last three weeks, which I don’t feel is long enough for it to be my main recommendation. If you want to read that review though, you can find it here!

Benefit GALifornia Blush

This has been my favourite blush for the last 2-3 years. Of course, it is mostly the shade, so that will really be up to everyone’s personal preference. However, for me I find this shade of coral just adds so much life to the cheeks, and happens to go with almost any look. This is my go-to blush, when I need my makeup to look on point, and it never fails me.

Hourglass Vanish Flash Highlighting Stick

I cannot and will not stop recommending these highlighters. They are just too good! These highlighters are creamy, beautiful and glowy. You can apply them by simply swiping some product on to a damp beauty sponge, and then dabbing it on to your cheek. You don’t need to worry if you have set your foundation or not, it will look great either way! When applied, they do not highlight any texture, and really just add a beautiful shine to the face. You can either have them appear as a natural glow, or they can be built up to be blinding! I know they are expensive, but in my opinion they are so so worth it and if I could only buy one highlighter, it would be this one! Read my original review here.

Brow Colour

Anastasia Beverly Hills Dipbrow Pomade

I have been using this brow pomade for at least 3-4 years now. For years this was the only brow product I used, because it not only adds colour, but it also helps to keep your brows in place. I do use brow gels now in addition, mainly because my bangs will rudely jush my brow (although I still haven’t found a gel that has good enough hold; recommendations??). Regardless, when it comes to brow products, this is the product I have always relied upon and will continue to purchase. The pomade is very pigmented, so you only need a little at a time, making this product last very long. Additionally, it gives you a lot of flexibility as to whether you like having more intense or more natural-looking brows. You can achieve either look with this product.

Eyeshadow Palette

Anastasia Beverly Hills Riviera Palette

In terms of eyeshadow palettes, it is obviously very dependent on your own personal taste as to what you are going to go for. However, the ABH formula is one of the best high end formulas on the market. Their recent release of the Riviera palette has been my favourite to date. Although Soft Glam is a fan favourite for its reliability and neutrality, this palette is filled with potential for both neutral and colourful looks. I will admit, you will get more colourful than neutral out of this palette, but the performance is stunning, and I believe this may be the best ABH palette released yet. The most important aspect is this palette gets me EXCITED and INSPIRES me to use it. Read my review here with 7 different eye looks!

Liquid Eyeliner

Sephora Colorful Wink-It Felt Liner Waterproof

This is a great alternative to more expensive liquid liners. I’ve tried most of them, and I think this one is comparable at a slightly better price. I do sometimes find it bleeds a tiny bit on my inner corner when it is a brand new pen (I find only Stila doesn’t do that), but that goes away fairly quickly after you start using it. This isn’t the most matte liner, but it is very black and overall I find it easy to use.

Pencil Eyeliner

Urban Decay 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencil

These pencil eyeliners are probably the best on the market. They have great lasting power, and really the shade range is unparalleled. The only bad thing about these liners is that you have to sharpen them, and they are expensive! I usually try to buy them when they are on sale, so of course this Sephora sale presents the perfect opportunity. However, they have been on the Weekly Wow! before for 50% off. So keep your eyes peeled.

Urban Decay Vice Lipstick

I honestly don’t think I will ever find a lipstick formula that I prefer more than the Vice formula. Over time I think I have collected around 28 of these.. and I have loved them all (except for the shade Naked, where I didn’t find the formula consistent). This lipstick comes in 6 different formulas, and I have tried them all except for the Mega Mattes. Overall, all the shades I own are very comfortable on my typically dry lips, and they have great pigmentation. I highly recommend! You can read my very old review and see some cringe-y lip swatches here lol (one of my first posts ever?).

Lip Gloss

Fenty Gloss Bomb

I struggled with this decision a bit. I love so many gloss formulas! And there is a new contender that I think might usurp this ranking, but I digress… These Fenty Gloss Bombs are great! I have run through a full tube of the original shade, Fenty Glow, and I am probably 75% through Fu$$y. I just cannot stop wearing these glosses. I usually wear them on their own, but I do find I often top Fu$$y on top of other lip colours! The only shade I haven’t tried is Diamond Milk, mostly because it looked a little too frosty. Fenty Glow is a gorgeous warm nude and Fu$$y really looks like a clear gloss on me (the pink is so faint). But regardless, the formula is very hydrating and very shiny! Plus, they smell amazing and you get a ton of product! It doesn’t get much better than that…

Well those are all of my recommendations if I could only recommend one… What would you recommend for each category? Which of these do you agree with?

  1. I’m still trying to use up my Tarte Aquacealer! It’s lasted me soo long, and I’ve been using it daily for the past few months. The Fenty gloss bomb is near the top of my wishlist!

    1. I probably like them pretty equally… I mean they are different formulas for sure… but they are both sheer and very comfortable. I think I selected the Fenty one because it is perhaps a touch more hydrating! They are perhaps a bit shinier too! But really I love both formulas. I actually just repurchased a shade of one of the Becca glosses because I’ve run through a full tube!
