Wow! or Waste? Kylie Cosmetics Valentine’s Day Collection

Hey everyone! Welcome back to Wow! or Waste? Whether a whole collection has been launched, or just a new product, I’m going to evaluate whether each product is either a Wow! buy or a Waste? of money, in terms of the price and the amount of product you get.

This time around we are evaluating the new Valentine’s Day collection from Kylie Cosmetics, which launches February 1, 2019 at 3 PM PST. Yes, it’s THAT soon!

collection_page_banner-min.png

This V-Day inspired collection includes one shadow palette, one shade of the Glitter Eyes liquid eyeshadows, one shade of Blush and three lip sets that each include a lip liner, matte liquid lipstick and a high gloss. If you want to cop the full collection, it’s going to cost you $195 USD. Yikes! BUT, you can purchase everything separately if you want to pick and choose, which is my kind of thing for sure.

If you are a regular on my blog, you will know that I never cover anything Kardashian/Jenner-related. I’m just not interested, perhaps because they are so over-hyped. Throughout my life I have almost always gone the opposite of overhyped trends, only sometimes jumping on the brand wagon a couple years after they became hot, so this aversion to Kardashians is likely the same kind of thing.

HOWEVER, this collection has actually drawn my attention! So much so that I want to explore whether the prices are worth it when looking at how much product you get! This is often a huge deciding factor in whether I purchase something or not. Whether you think you will use all the product or not, I want to know if these items have been priced fairly when looking at other items on the market!

So, do you want to know whether these items are a Wow! or a Waste? Let’s get into it!

The Valentine Pressed Powder Palette

Product Information

“The Kylie Cosmetics  limited edition Valentine Palette  is your secret weapon to create the perfect Kylie look. Each Palette comes with 12 pressed powders that can be used together to recreate Kylie’s favorite looks or customize your own.”

This eyeshadow palette comes with 12 shades, six of which are shimmers/metallics and six are mattes. The shade range is very neutral, but some classic V-Day pops of pink and red are there to allow you to take your looks to the next level! I actually really love the colour story of this palette, even though it is so neutral.

One note, because this eyeshadow palette is actually (and likely, carefully) termed a “pressed powder palette” I would assume some of the ingredients in this palette are not FDA approved as eye safe (a common thing with red pigments). When you see “eye” excluded from the name, this is likely the cause, unless all of the palettes from that brand don’t have “eye” in the name (Kylie Cosmetics does have some termed “eyeshadow” palettes).

Shades

Heartthrob: metallic sparkling champagne
Princess: matte soft beige
Blush: metallic golden peach
Pink Problems: matte dusty rose
Princess: matte soft beige
Be Mine: metallic vibrant peach
February: matte pink sorbet
Romance: metallic pink ice
Kandy Heart: matte bright watermelon
Kinda Classy: metallic honey
First Date: matte true strawberry
Love Bug: metallic violet cranberry
Admirer: satin warm brown with violet glitter

*Please note- Kandy Heart & First Date are pressed powder pigments.

Price and Quantity

This eyeshadow palette is priced at $45 USD and has 0.6 oz of product.

For price comparisons, I tried to select high end palettes that have a similar colour range: nudes with perhaps some pinks, berries or reds. I also specifically chose palettes that include both mattes and shimmers/metallics.

Here are the comparisons listed from best value to worst value:

Rank Product Cost
($ USD)
Quantity (oz) Number of Shades Cost-Quantity Ratio for 1 oz of product
1 Violet Voss Mini Eyeshadow Palette “Berry Burst” $18 0.4 10 $45/oz
2 Huda Beauty Obsessions “Ruby” $27 0.45 9 $60/oz
3 Kylie Cosmetics Valentine’s Day Pressed Powder Palette $42 0.6 12 $70/oz
4 Huda Beauty Rose Gold Remastered $65 0.69 18 $94/oz
5 Urban Decay Naked Cherry $54 0.46 12 $117/oz
6 Anastasia Beverly Hills Modern Renaissance $42 0.28 14 $150/oz

Wow! or Waste?

Overall, this palette doesn’t do too bad in value when compared to other similar products on the market. It’s not a Wow!, but it’s not a Waste? either!

While I don’t think that this palette is anything unique exactly, the fact that it includes some near neon shades is actually kind of different. A lot of companies don’t produce these kinds of shades because it’s hard/likely impossible to formulate those shades and still have the shadows still be FDA approved, because of the pigments you have to use. I’m thinking Kylie decided to put the shade formulation above “FDA approval”, which is probably fine. There are plenty of palettes on the market that use pigments that are not FDA approved, and the main issue is that they may stain your skin for a day or two. You likely already own palettes that can cause some staining.

One thing I do wish is that the packaging of the actual palette was more special. It’s literally just a nude pink.. I absolutely love the carton packaging, with the cute bras, some of which are glittery. I think it is the right level of cute, V-Day-y and tasteful. The bras themselves aren’t overly sexualized or lingerie-y. Overall, because the carton packaging is so cute, I wish the component packaging matched! It’s left me feeling a little wanting.. Which is not something you want on Valentine’s Day! LOL!

Glitter Eyes “Roses are Red”

01-valntine15091.jpg

01-_0011_valntine-roses-are-red16146-e1549077400356.jpg

Product Information

Glitter Eyes are liquid eyeshadows with a bold metallic finish that can be worn on top of shadow or on their own. This shade in “Roses are Red” is described as an icy pink. I do have a bit of an issue with the name, given that the shade is baby pink. Like, why? Regardless, this shade looks like such a nice topper for any eyeshadow look to give it a little sparkle.

Price and Quantity

This liquid eyeshadow is priced at $20 USD and has 0.22 oz of product.

For price comparisons, I simply chose some other high end liquid eyeshadows that are popular or new on the market.

Here are the comparisons listed from best value to worst value:

Rank Product  Cost
($ USD)
Quantity (oz) Cost-Quantity Ratio for 1 oz of product
1 Kylie Cosmetics Glitter Eyes $20 0.22 $91/oz
2 Too Faced Twinkle Twinkle Liquid Glitter Eye Shadow $22 0.21 $105/oz
3 Urban Decay Liquid Moondust Cream Eyeshadow $22 0.17 $129/oz
4 Touch In Sol Metallist Liquid Foil & Glitter Eye Shadow Duo $25 0.193 $130/oz
5 Stila Shimmer/Glitter & Glow $24 0.15 $160/oz
6 Make Up For Ever Star Lit Liquid $24 0.15 $160/oz
7 Huda Beauty Matte & Metal Melted Double Ended Eyeshadows $25 0.14 $179/oz
8 Tarte Seaglass Liquid Eyeshadow $22 0.12 $183/oz

Wow! or Waste?

Ranking in first place, this liquid eyeshadow is a Wow! From the swatches, it also looks like it is going to be a nice one, and has a good level of opacity. What a pretty shade to put all over the lid!

Valentine’s Lip Sets

01-_0007_valntine15066.jpg

01-_0005_valntine15079.jpg

Product Information

For this launch, three lip sets are being released, each with one lip liner, one matte liquid lipstick and one high gloss. From what I can tell, all of the products are full-sized, which is is awesome. Most lip sets offered by other brands lean more on the side of being mini value sets. The sets being released are:

  • The Love Set (Pinks/Roses):
    • Wish You Were Here Matte Liquid Lipstick is a pinky nude with yellow undertones

    • You Are A Gem Lip Liner is a burnt rose

    • Sweet High Gloss is a sheer light pink with gold shimmer

  • The Soulmate Set (Reds):
    • Call Me Matte Liquid Lipstick is a true red

    • Beau Lip Liner is a deep true red

    • Blow Me Away High Gloss is a sheer gold with red shimmer

  • The Forever Set (Pinky nudes):
    • Built to Last Matte Liquid Lipstick is a peachy pink nude
    • Forever and Always Lip Liner is a warm yellow nude
    • Story of Us High Gloss is a peachy gold with lilac and pink shimmer

Price and Quantity

Each set is $42 USD, and between all of the products you are getting a total of 0.25 oz of product. When you break down how much one lip liner, one matte liquid lipstick and one high gloss would cost, the total comes to $45 USD, so it’s not much of a saving getting the set when compared to the individual prices. However, it hasn’t been stated whether these products will be available individually.

For price comparisons, I have listed other lip sets that are being offered by high end companies. I couldn’t find that many, and none of them include full-sized products, so this comparison overall might not be that helpful, but it gives you an idea of what is available.

Here are the comparisons listed from best value to worst value:

Rank Product  Cost
($ USD)
Quantity (oz) Cost-Quantity Ratio for 1 oz of product
1 Huda Beauty Contour & Strobe Lip Set $25 0.17 $147/oz
2 Kylie Cosmetics V-Day Lip Sets $42 0.25 $168/oz
3 Jouer Jet-Set Lip Set $25 0.14 $179/oz
4 Marc Jacobs Sugar High Nude Lip Trio $25 0.11 $227/oz

Wow! or Waste?

Overall, for a set that includes all full-sized products, a second place ranking isn’t so bad. I would even say it’s a Wow! I think it’s cool that Kylie is offering these different sets with a selection of different products and shades. She’s always been known for her matching lip sets, but the fact that these include three different formulas is cool. I’m however, not tempted by these because I don’t like liquid lipsticks, but they do look really beautiful!

Valentine’s Blush “Crush”

01-_0001_valntine15098.jpg

Product Information

“The Kylie Cosmetics limited edition Valentine’s Day Blush single is your secret weapon to create the perfect Kylie flush. Each Blush single comes with 1 matte pressed powder blush that can be used to recreate Kylie’s favorite looks or customize your own.”

The shade “Crush” that is coming out with this collection is described as a baby peach and it looks so pretty! Definitely the kind of shade that is right up my alley.

Price and Quantity

This blush is apparently going to be priced at $18 USD, even though all her other blushes are priced at $20 USD. I will update if this information changes. In her regular blushes you get 0.26 oz of product, so assuming this new blush is the same size, that is what you will be getting!

For price comparisons, I selected other high end blushes that have more of a matte/satin finish and have peaches in their range.

Here are the comparisons listed from best value to worst value:

Rank Product  Cost
($ USD)
Quantity (oz) Cost-Quantity Ratio for 1 oz of product
1 Kylie Cosmetics Blush $18 0.26 $69/oz
2 NARS Blush $30 0.28 $107/oz
3 Urban Decay Afterglow 8-Hour Powder Blush $26 0.23 $113/oz
4 BareMinerals Gen Nude Powder Blush $24 0.21 $114/oz
5 Pretty Vulgar Make Them Blush Powder Blush $26 0.2 $130/oz
6 Make Up For Ever Artist Face Color Highlight, Sculpt and Blush Powder $23 0.17 $135/oz
7 Tarte Amazonian Clay 12-Hour Blush $29 0.2 $145/oz
8 Laura Mercier Blush Colour Infusion $30 0.2 $150/oz
9 Buxom Wanderlust Primer-Infused Blush $22 0.12 $183/oz
10 Clinique Cheek Pop $24 0.12 $200/oz

Wow! or Waste?

Ranking in first place among 9 other products, this is by far a Wow! You get a ton of product with this blush, and the shade is oh so pretty! I have to admit, when she recently released all of her blush shades, I was definitely eyeing them. Overall, I’m not sure if this is the shade I want, or if there is another, but these blushes are actually a great value!

Overall Collection Value

As I did more and more of these price comparisons among the products being launched in this collection, I became more and more wowed and surprised! After never paying attention to anything Kylie Cosmetics, I still had some impression that she had a pricey brand, which doesn’t usually translate to good value. Well I was so wrong. Really, most of her products seem to be priced on par with other high end brands, if not on the more affordable side. With a name like Kylie Jenner, I think we all know she could get away with charging more if she wanted to. I think she could have easily launched herself as a luxury brand, but I suppose she knew her demographic reached into younger ages that aren’t usually as affluent.

Overall, I’m not sure if I will get anything from this collection, but I am certainly interested! My interests mostly lie with the eyeshadow palette, the liquid eyeshadow and the blush.

Here is the overview of what we have learned through this Kylie Cosmetics Valentine’s Day edition of Wow! or Waste?

Product Product Category Rank Within category Wow! or Waste?
The Valentine Pressed Powder Palette Eyeshadow Palette 3 Neither
Glitter Eyes Liquid Eyeshadow 1 Wow!
Valentine’s Day Lip Sets Lip Sets 2 Wow!
