Hey everyone! After last week’s overview of my favourite beauty releases from 2018, I thought it was only fair to also give the worst releases some attention. Honestly, throughout 2018 I felt like I was constantly being bombarded by releases that I didn’t have one ounce of interest in. Some releases were of course worse than others. And I’m not just talking about the quality of the product, but mainly the theory/concept behind the release. From being uninclusive, to downright disgusting, and don’t forget about just plain boring, so many products were just not my cup of tea in 2018, so let’s talk about it!
It goes without saying (but here I am saying it anyways) that you may not agree with all my opinions on these products, and I might even diss a few products that you love. I can practically guarantee you are not going to agree with my opinion on at least one product, and that’s ok. My intention isn’t to upset anyone, but to be my sassy self and chat about beauty products, which we all love to do.
You will notice that there is one brand in here that I am especially hard on, and that is Too Faced. I think 2018 was an exceptionally bad year for Too Faced, and sorry but I’m just not going to let them get away with it! After writing about all of these poorly thought-out products, the end result in my mind seems to be that they need to get a new creative director, but that’s just my opinion. I think a lot of brands could do with a change of creative directors (Urban Decay, Benefit, IT Cosmetics just for example).
Since I already prefaced this post by letting you know Too Faced was going to be in here a lot, let’s just get them out of the way altogether and start with them.
I think the most offensive release by far this year was the GLOW JOB mask. I literally could not have felt more repulsed when they announced the name of this product. Glow Job?! This is problematic in so many ways that I have trouble even beginning. First of all, Too Faced’s target age range seems to be younger and younger every year, or even month (based on the childish concepts and packaging of some of their collections). Whether they are truly targeting pre-teens and teens or not, realistically that is likely one of their main demographics, so to be promoting this sexual act to underage kids is just so inappropriate. The visuals that accompany this mask are also thoroughly disturbing. What is the concept here? The mask is called glow job so what, is the mask itself supposed to be cum on your face? I just can’t….
A lot of people trying to defend this product as funny or cute tried to redirect blame to brands like NARS who have hugely popular products named Orgasm and Deep Throat. While I think Deep Throat is equally as unnecessary, Orgasm is totally different to me (although it’s unnecessary as a name well). Using orgasm as a name isn’t nearly as bad because to me it represents female gratification, female empowerment and women actually being allowed to embrace their sexuality which for a long time was simply not a thing. On the other hand, Glow Job is all about servicing men, and potentially being viewed as property of men, and the fact that it is coming from a company that has two male founders just makes it all the more creepy to me. Anyways, just my opinions but this product was a massive fail and put a huge black mark against Too Faced for me!
Now this product as a concept was wonderful. I was so excited to purchase this eyeshadow palette in January of 2018, but it was awful in terms of performance and it just had too many similar mid-tone shades, making it difficult to build depth. Overall, I couldn’t make this palette work for me at all, and it was largely due to the new formula that they debuted in this palette. I did a Palette Roulette with this palette if you are curious to know my in-depth thoughts. But overall, this was the worst product I tried in 2018.
Too Faced Life’s a Festival Collection
Back when this collection was launching, I actually wrote a dedicated opinion piece explaining my issues with this collection. A lot of my feelings can be summed up by this excerpt from that post:

- I do not go to festivals and I do not want to go to any festivals.
- I am 24 and not a child.
- I dislike Jerrod Blandino.
- At this point, after the continual onslaught of unicorn propaganda, I kind of f@cking hate unicorns and mermaids.”
Overall, I found that I had zero interest in this collection as it was based on a theme (freaking unicorns) that at that point was so overdone, and that Too Faced was coming extremely late to the party on (after being the self-proclaimed creator of unicorn products). This collection was also a major turning point for Too Faced’s packaging. What used to be either cute or classy packaging became 100% childish. Lastly, a makeup collection for festival’s just isn’t realistic. Festivals happen only a few times a year. Are you going to wear these products 2-3 times per year? What other events will you wear these products to? This collection has got to be the least versatile out there. If you want to indulge in my full rant post, you can check it out here.
Alright I’m almost done bashing Too Faced. The last “huh?” of the year for me was their 20th Anniversary collection. Now I can completely understand an anniversary collection as a great concept, but the actual products that they released were all big question marks for me. One, they released metallic bullet lipsticks in various jewel tone shades. While in theory cute, metallic lipsticks really haven’t done that well even though they have been trendy in past years because they are just not wearable. Big surprise, a green metallic lipstick isn’t wearable. Furthermore, AGAIN, metallic lips are such an old trend at this point. They basically missed the boat by at least a year.
The major question mark for me though was the eyeshadow palette. Honestly I think the packaging couldn’t be more ugly, and that’s largely because of the old logo. The font could not be uglier. Inside the palette, you have 10 original shades from the 90’s, and then a row of reinvented shades that are supposedly inspired from the originals. So you are getting two of each shade? The concept of this palette just does not translate into functionality for me. How do you even create a look with this palette? The shades and finishes just seem so dissonant, I wouldn’t touch this palette with a 10 foot pole. And it’s not like I’m someone who is afraid of colour.
Overall, the whole collection just doesn’t make sense to me. Celebrating an anniversary is great. But why would you bring back products from the 90’s when the whole point of the passage of time is to improve and evolve. Why bring back these old and outdated products? I don’t care if the formula is better, this collection just did not translate well to modern-day trends and aesthetics.
Ok, hear me out. I know 99.9999% of you are already objecting. That’s fine, scroll on by if you want to. But I had major issues with this palette, so much that I literally sold it to someone else. I couldn’t even keep it in my collection because it annoyed me so much.
I can’t even tell you how excited I was for this palette initially. Even though it was touted as a purple palette with only three purples, I was still extremely interested because it seemed to have such a nice variety of cool and warm tones with some interesting shades like the orange/mustard and the mulberry. But all of the shades that I thought were the most interesting were the ones that disappointed me the most.
The two apparently beautiful and interesting shimmers, Wild Child and Celestial, had basically no base pigment, but just pink or purple scattered shimmer. They were so thin that getting them to have a good effect, even on a tacky base was difficult. I found both of these shades incredibly disappointing, especially since we know ABH can do amazing shimmers/metallics.
The second disappointment for me were the matte shades Eccentric and Passion. When applied to the eye, what were supposed to be a orange/mustard and a mulberry immediately faded to literal browns, almost immediately. This was the most disappointing aspect for me, because this palette literally looked like it had different, interesting shades, but then after the fact when they were actually used, they faded to be just neutrals. And it’s not like I was blending one on top of the other, causing the change in shade, they changed shade all on their own, even on an extremely light base. The colour in the pan was complete false advertising. If you haven’t encountered any of these problems, I’m glad for you. But I found this palette to be a huge disappointment.
This doesn’t require a lot of explanation. But can Beauty Blender stop releasing different shades of sponges like it’s such a big deal? The colours do NOTHING. And every single time they and Trendmood make a huge deal out of it like they recreated the wheel. I couldn’t roll my eyes harder every time I see a new one release.
As we all know, Tarte majorly blew it in 2018 by trying to release a foundation that had an extremely non-diverse shade selection. Why people decided to start standing up in such a big way for shade diversity with this release, I’m not entirely sure. Obviously Fenty had just released their massive shade range months prior to this, so that will have had a major impact, but why Tarte? Perhaps because the shape tape concealer was so beloved, the excitement was so high that the actual release was a crushing disappointment. This disappointment and massive drama was followed by Beauty Blender going full steam ahead with their foundation that also had a terrible shade range, despite boasting a range of 32 shades. Did they think they were immune or something? The stupidest part is that they tried to explain it away by saying they were targeting latin skin tones only after the fact, when the foundation was originally advertised to have an all-inclusive range with 32 shades. The point is that the range wasn’t balanced, which seems a hard feat with 32 freaking shades.
This was a sad year for foundation releases my friends. But a good year for people beginning to demand inclusivity. I think the internet has made it clear at this point that these kinds of releases are just not acceptable.
I’m going to be straight with you. These makeup brushes make me want to straight up stab my eyes out. They are the ugliest and stupidest brushes I have ever seen and I never want to talk about or see them ever again. And they were a holiday release!!! What an affront to the holidays!!
This is one of those ideas that you perhaps come up with when you are high and have the munchies, but should NEVER come to fruition. NEVER!!! I’m sorry but pizza is just not cute, and neither is this eyeshadow palette. If this was sent free to me, I would still not use it. It is so ugly, bulky, and unaesthetically pleasing, and it’s not even like the colour story is amazing! And it’s $40 USD!!!! AHHHH WHY ARE PEOPLE GETTING THIS. As a brand, I would be embarrassed to sell this product.
My main question is… why? The main concept of this release was and is amazing, 100% of the proceeds go towards the Clara Lionel Foundation, which is Rihanna’s non-profit organization dedicated to helping education, health, and emergency response programs around the world. Incredible right?! Why then, did she release a product that can not possibly have done that well. Why not release a product that is both beautiful and incredibly wearable, ensuring it’s success? Releasing such a strange silver highlighter is just so bizarre to me, didn’t she want this to do well? I have a hard time believing that this highlighter could look good on anyone. And if you are buying it as an eyeshadow, what a giant and expensive single!

Becca Ocean Jewels Collection
This last one was merely a victim of improper timing. This very ocean-y summer-y collection was released in February… FEBRUARY. What is wrong with this picture? While yes, there are certainly places in the world that don’t suffer from seasonality, the majority of the US and North America in general does have a Winter and you would think a US-based company would be aware of this and would make their releases more relevant to the seasons. While I can see that perhaps some would be thrilled to have an escape from Winter with this summery collection, I myself felt mainly dumbfounded with such an irrelevant release. When it’s freezing out, perhaps snowing, I’m not using or looking for summery makeup. There’s a time for everything, and I think this collection would have been way more of an overall success had it been released in the summer, or even April or May.
Also, the eyeshadow palette could not be less ocean-y if it tried.

Well, those were all of my opinions on the worst releases of 2018! Honestly, I think 2018 was kind of an abysmal year for beauty releases, which was likely a result of brands going for quantity over quality. And I’m not talking quality of product, but quality of ideas! While I certainly loved some products released last year, I feel like there were far too many blunders. We can only hope 2019 will be an improvement!
