The Beauty Sale Scale | Sephora Weekly Wow September 13, 2018

Hello everyone! Welcome to my series, The Beauty Sale Scale, where I critique and give my opinion on beauty items that go on sale! Are they worth your money? Have I tried those products? Are they actually being offered at a good price?

I will be rating beauty products that are on sale on a 5-point lipstick scale (as seen below), with regards to how good the price is, whether I know the product is good or not, and reviews of the product from people who have tried it. If I think a product is an amazingly good deal and I would suggest it to you, the product would receive 5/5 lipsticks. If it’s a waste of your time, 1 lipstick out of 5 will be the verdict.

Items that are included in the sale often differ between Canada and the US, so I have made sure to use headers to indicate which items are Canada only and which are US only, starting with the items that are available in both countries.

Tarte Highlighting Eyeshadow Palette Vol. III – Rainforest Of The Sea™ Collection

Screen Shot 2018-09-15 at 12.16.48 PM.png

Original: $47 CAD, $36 USD
Sale: $23.50 CAD, $18 USD
Percentage off: 50%

Rating on Sephora = 4.3/5

Quick Take

I have not tried any of these Tarte Rainforest of the Sea eyeshadow palettes, but this one is supposed to have a very creamy texture and is meant to highlight the eyes and make you appear more awake. This palette comes with one transition-toned matte and 7 shimmer shades, which will prove to make it difficult to create a look with much depth (there is one deeper shimmer). This palette could be good for someone who is just looking for a simple look and to swipe on something shimmery (apparently your finger is best). However, quite a few customers have complained that the pigmentation is lacking. Regardless, many reviewers rave about the amount of sparkle you can get! If these sound like things you like, this could be a good deal, given that the discount is good!

SUPERNOVABEAUTY Rating = 4/5 This could be a good buy.

Urban Decay Naked Skin Weightless Complete Coverage Concealer

Original: $35 CAD, $29 USD
Sale: $17.50 CAD, $14.50 USD
Percentage off: 50%

Rating on Sephora = 4.0/5

Quick Take

This is one of my favourite concealers for the under eye! I first tried this concealer in the summer of 2017, and it was awesome! It’s on the more liquidy and hydrating side, therefore it doesn’t make my skin get all crinkly and dry. It also barely creased on me. When used to spot conceal, this concealer did strange things like move around and erase my foundation, so I wouldn’t recommend it for that. This concealer is very similar to the Tarte Rainforest of the Sea Aquacealer Concealer, however I think this one has better lasting power (if your eyes water or you cry it doesn’t wash away etc.). However, a major drawback with this concealer is that the value is terrible. It’s $35 CAD regularly, and you only get 0.16 oz of product, where the typical amount of product included in high end concealers ranges anywhere from 0.20 oz to 0.35 oz for a similar price (the new Too Faced Sculpting Concealer has 0.5 oz!!) So, now that this product is on sale, that solves the value issue! As soon as I saw that this concealer had gone on sale, I immediately purchased the shades Light Neutral and Light-Medium Neutral. Even though I do love this concealer, it has some controversial reviews (some people say it doesn’t have enough coverage, others say it gets cakey on them), so make sure that you check them out.

SUPERNOVABEAUTY Rating = 5/5 You need this product!

First Aid Beauty Hello FAB Coconut Water Cream

Screen Shot 2018-09-15 at 12.47.03 PM.png

Original: $42 CAD, $34 USD
Sale: $21 CAD, $17 USD
Percentage off: 50%

Rating on Sephora = 4.2/5

Quick Take

This is an oil-free water cream that uses coconut water to hydrate normal, combination, oily and sensitive skin types. This formula is supposedly noncomedogenic and is supposed to absorb into the skin immediately to make it appear softer, smoother, and more plumped. Ingredients of note include coconut water to replenish electrolytes, amino acids, enzymes, antioxidants, and phytonutrients in the skin and sodium hyaluronate, a humectant that boosts the skin’s moisture content. In the reviews, SO many people recommend this moisturizer, reporting that it is lightweight yet extremely hydrating. However, this product doesn’t seem to be quite right for those of you who are extremely dry or experience seasonal dryness. Honestly, this moisturizer sounds amazing to me and I’m going to order it right now! There really don’t seem to be any drawbacks, although a pump would have been nicer.

SUPERNOVABEAUTY Rating = 4/5 This could be a good buy.

Make Up For Ever Star Lit Powder

Screen Shot 2018-09-15 at 12.56.56 PM.png

Original: $25 CAD, $21 USD
Sale: $17.50 CAD, $15 USD
Percentage off: 30%

Rating on Sephora = 4.7/5

Quick Take

This is supposed to be an ultra fine shimmering powder that can be used anywhere on your face. I’m not entirely sure what makes this powder different from the Diamond Powder (see below, on sale in Canada), but this product has way more shades and overall the reviews are a lot higher. However, this isn’t the best sale at only 30% off. But based on how good these supposedly are, I still think that they could be a good buy, and potentially a better buy than the Diamond Powders. Many of the shades are sold out in Canada online, but most are still available on the US Sephora.

SUPERNOVABEAUTY Rating = 4/5 This could be a good buy.

Make Up For Ever Diamond Power

Original: $31 CAD
Sale: $22 CAD
Percentage off: 29%

Rating on Sephora = 4.2/5

Quick Take

This is supposed to be an ultra fine sparkly powder that can be used anywhere on your face. Picture a beautiful sheen, not chunky glitter. A ton of reviewers rave about how beautiful the sparkle is, although some seem peeved about how much you have to pay for such a small amount of product. But this sale may solve that (although, 29% off isn’t that great)! Additionally, I’m sure a little bit of product goes a long way, so this could be a nice investment if you have been looking to add a little more sparkle to your beauty routine. But overall, the Star Lit Powder sounds like the better buy based on the reviews and shade selection.

SUPERNOVABEAUTY Rating = 3/5 It’s not the best deal.

Rating on Sephora = 3.7/5

Quick Take

This is a liquid eyeshadow and highlighter that is supposed to be buildable and non-sticky. While this product looks pretty and it has plenty of good reviews (some say it is “sparkle heaven”!), many people have reported that it cracks and crumbles after only a few hours of wear, which sounds awful! This sounds like a riskier purchase to me, based on the lower reviewer rating.

SUPERNOVABEAUTY Rating = 2/5 Try at your own risk!

Tarte Eyeshadow Palette Volume II – Rainforest of the Sea™ Collection

Screen Shot 2018-09-15 at 12.13.49 PM.png

Original: $36 USD
Sale: $18 USD
Percentage off: 50%

Rating on Sephora = 3.8/5

Quick Take

This Tarte Rainforest of the Sea eyeshadow palette II is supposed to be similar to volume III discussed above with the same creamy texture, but is more cool-toned and has four mattes and four lusters. Overall this is going to be a better more comprehensive palette for neutral lovers, because there are more matte shades and it will be easier to build depth. The overall report from customers is that it is a great palette for basic looks. One review is titled “World’s Okayist Palette”, and I think that probably sums it up pretty well! It’s neutral, it’s basic, it might become your every day go-to. But, it’s nothing special. If this is something that attracts you, then what a deal!

SUPERNOVABEAUTY Rating = 4/5 This could be a good buy.

  1. I got one of those MUFE Star Lit powders in the gunmetal shade in my press goodie bag at The Makeup Show Orlando. It looks pretty, but not something I would’ve bought on my own (but hey I got it for free so I’ll try it). I swatched it on my arm but I’ll try it as an eyeshadow at some point.
