Lancome L’Absolu Lacquer | Review + Swatches

Hello everyone! Today I am bringing you a lip product review!

Lately, all I’ve been doing is posting about eyeshadow and eyeshadow palettes, and to be honest I’m starting to get a little burned out. I feature eyeshadow so much because it is the most fun part of my makeup routine. However, with the amount of eyeshadow palettes coming out these days, feeling the need to review and try them out has become overwhelming. I’m getting to the point where I just want to do the looks I want to do. I don’t want to have to feel like I have to play with a specific palette because I am trying to get a review out.

I still need to review the ABH Norvina palette, the Colourpop X KL Zodiac palette and I just received the Revolution X Emily Noel palette in the mail. Likely, the ABH review will be coming up soon, but for the other two, I’m going to take my time, and potentially not even do a full review (if you do want a full review, let me know). I just need a break! So let’s focus on some really unique lip products instead, the Lancome L’Absolu Lacquers!

Packaging and First Impressions

These lipglosses come in a tapered tube that has glossy black ombre that transitions into the colour of the shade that you have purchased. The top of the tube has a gold embossed flower for the Lancome logo. The component overall looks very high end. Inside, the applicator is a narrow, paddle-shaped doefoot. I didn’t notice any overwhelming scent.

This lipgloss comes in 30 shades, some of which are in a “shimmering” finish. I have purchased “Beige Sensation 274”, which is described as a pink brown and “Be Unique 378”, which is described as a fuchsia. Both of these are in the creme finish, or whatever the non-shimmering lip glosses are.

Price and Quantity

These lipglosses are priced at $34 CAD ($26 USD) and have 0.27 oz of product. As you will see from the comparisons, this is actually quite a bit more product than usual.

For price comparisons, I have chosen a variety of lip glosses that range from high end to luxury. Most of them are not meant to be long lasting, or even meant to leave a stain, just because this is rather a unique product in that respect. Although the YSL products are meant to do similar things.

Here are the comparisons listed from best value to worst value:

Rank Product  Cost
($ CAD)
Quantity (oz) Cost-Quantity Ratio for 1 oz of product
1 Urban Decay Hi-Fi Shine Ultra Cushion Lip Gloss $23 0.23 $100/oz
2 Lancome L’Absolu Lacquer $34 0.27 $126/oz
3 Anastasia Beverly Hills Lipgloss $21 0.16 $131/oz
4 Becca Glow Lip Gloss $27 0.18 $150/oz
5 Buxom Full-on Lip Polish/Cream $24 0.15 $160/oz
6 Huda Beauty Lip Strobe $23 0.14 $164/oz
7 NARS Velvet Lip Glide  $34 0.2 $170/oz
7 Tarte H2O Lip Gloss  $23 0.14 $170/oz
8 Bite Beauty French Press Lip Gloss $26 0.15 $173/oz
9 bareMinerals GEN NUDE Buttercream Lipgloss $23 0.13 $177/oz
10 Marc Jacobs Enamoured Hi-Shine Lip Lacquer $35 0.16 $219/oz
11 YSL Glossy Stain Lip Color $44 0.2 $220/oz
12 YSL Vinyl Cream Lip Stain $44 0.17 $259/oz

Surprisingly, this luxury lip product has such a good value! When do you ever expect that? Never! I know many people do not think they are going to go through a lip product, and I’m sure most of the time that is true! However, I have gone through lip products before if I have really loved them, so value is an important consideration for me. It’s also just the principal of the thing.

Overall, I think that this lip gloss is an equally good choice, regardless of whether you are looking for something that is long-lasting or not. I’m always going to recommend the Anastasia Beverly Hills glosses and the Becca glosses, but those are not meant to be long lasting.

Pigmentation and Performance

Overall, the amount of pigmentation that you can build up with these is remarkable! And the application is just as described in the claims above: use one coat for a light tint, two coats for a pigmented glossy finish, and three coats for high impact pigmentation and a high gloss finish. Isn’t that cool how these lips are so multi-purpose? That is all thanks to the unique gel-like formula.

Here are some swatches with a few coats. It looks streaky, but it’s easier to not get a streaky finish on the lips.

swatches
Above: “Be Unique 378” a fuchsia. Below: “Beige Sensation 274″a pink brown.

Because these lip products claim to leave a stain, I’ve included a picture of my arm after wiping off the swatches. You can see that even after only being applied to the skin for 5 minutes or less, a stain starts to set in. It is much more noticeable with the fuchsia, and I find it’s that way on the lips as well.

stain

When first applied, the product literally feels like thin water being applied to your lips. But, after letting it sit on your lips for a few seconds, the product actually seems to gel down/ slightly solidify to give you a kind of set gel on your lips. Because the product actually sets, it allows you to build up pigment really efficiently, because as you add on layers, it’s not mixing with the bottom layer and thinning out or moving around.

Because the formula does set down, I would not recommend pressing your lips together and rubbing them back and forth like you might with a regular lip gloss that remains in a liquid state. If you do do that, the set product will move around and wear unevenly and may even look a little chunky. Just apply the product, and leave it, and it will look incredible!

Here are some lip swatches of Beige Sensation 274. I find that the description of this shade as being a pink brown is accurate, however, the colour on the lips is SO much darker than it appears in the tube. And that seems to be true for both shades I own. I find that after I apply the shade, it deepens as it sets down.

And here are some swatches of Be Unique. Be Unique is similar in that it sets down to be a deeper shade than I would expect. Also, the pigmentation is so saturated that in person it really comes off as a bright strawberry red instead of a fuchsia.

The reason why I like these glosses is the lasting power. These are my go-to product when I am going out these days. Instead of reaching for a drying, uncomfortable liquid lipstick that I will still need to reapply throughout the night (I don’t care how long lasting the claims say they are), I can now reach for a comfortable glossy lip that has a reasonable wear time.

These glosses apply very thinly, but very pigmented with layering, and they are extremely comfortable. I also find they are really quite long-wearing for a lip gloss. Because they set down, there is very minimal transfer with drinking, however, you will experience more wear with eating. But overall, these can last through a lot on your lips, and you certainly won’t have to reapply as much as you would with a normal lip gloss. As for the staining, it is more noticeable with the fuchsia shade, however I find the stain isn’t very even. It stains more deeply in the lines of your lips, so I mostly prefer to reapply when they wear down.

Final Thoughts

Overall, these lip products are both unique and amazing! I can truly say I own nothing else like them, and I have never experienced a formula quite like this! The fact that they set down, but stay ultra glossy is incredible! And most importantly, they are comfortable. I think these are the new liquid lip, so watch out!

  1. Amazing review, the gloss looks so nice and I love the shade “Beige Sensation” it’s such a pretty shade, the other one is too pink to my liking but it’s looks so nice on you!!

    1. Beige Sensation is definitely so nice! Although it comes off so much warmer than I was expecting when I first purchased it. The pink one is definitely bright and not something I wear often. Bu I do like it for the summer. I just ordered two more shades 🙂

    1. I know! I’ve heard about them here and there from Canadian Youtubers but I think they’ve been flying under the radar for the most part. Probably because they are luxury and quite expensive!
