The Beauty Sale Scale | Sephora Weekly Wow July 26, 2018

Hello everyone! Welcome to my series, The Beauty Sale Scale, where I critique and give my opinion on beauty items that go on sale! Are they worth your money? Have I tried those products? Are they actually being offered at a good price?

I will be rating beauty products that are on sale on a 5-point lipstick scale (as seen below), with regards to how good the price is, whether I know the product is good or not, and reviews of the product from people who have tried it. If I think a product is an amazingly good deal and I would suggest it to you, the product would receive 5/5 lipsticks. If it’s a waste of your time, 1 lipstick out of 5 will be the verdict.

Items that are included in the sale often differ between Canada and the US, so I have made sure to use headers to indicate which items are Canada only and which are US only, starting with the items that are available in both countries.

Price

Original: $59 CAD, $45 USD
Sale: $30 CAD, $23 USD
Percentage off: 50%

Rating on Sephora = 4.7/5

Quick Take

This is a highlight and contour palette that includes 2 matte highlight shades, 2 matte bronzing shades, and 2 shimmery bronzing shades. While I haven’t tried this palette myself, I know personally that Tarte powders are typically very blendable and smooth, with great pigmentation. The reviews on Sephora absolutely RAVE about this palette! People love the blending, love the pigment. The five star ratings are through the roof! This may be that one product that you didn’t know you needed, but you do! Also, the packaging is gorgeous!

SUPERNOVABEAUTY Rating = 5/5 You need this product!

Sephora Collection PRO Liquid Foundation #63

Price

Original: $40 CAD, $32 USD
Sale: $20 CAD, $16 USD
Percentage off: 50%

Rating on Sephora = 4.1/5

Quick Take

This is a synthetic foundation brush that is meant to give you a light, natural-looking application for liquid foundations. While some reviewers say they love it and the application is flawless and non-streaky, it seems that quite a few people are reporting that it soaks up a ton of product (even though it is synthetic?) and that the bristles are just too long. Overall, it seems that whether people like this brush or not is really personal. So, make sure that you like this shape before purchasing. A $20 brush is pretty damn good though!

SUPERNOVABEAUTY Rating = 3/5 It’s not the best deal.

Sephora Collection PRO Contour Blender #77

Price

Original: $43 CAD, $34 USD
Sale: $21.50 CAD, $17 USD
Percentage off: 50%

Rating on Sephora = 4.4/5

Quick Take

This is a synthetic contour brush that is meant to work well with powders, liquids and creams. The curved shape of the brush is designed to hug the cheekbones and jawline for effortless contouring. The five-star reviews on this brush are through the roof. However, there are customers here and there that have reported blending problems with this brush. The response overall, however, is overwhelmingly positive. Again, a $20 face brush is pretty incredible (for good quality)!

SUPERNOVABEAUTY Rating = 4/5 This could be a good buy.

Sephora Collection PRO Precision Blush Brush #73

Price

Original: $40 CAD, $32 USD
Sale: $20 CAD, $16 USD
Percentage off: 50%

Rating on Sephora = 4.1/5

Quick Take

This is a smaller blush brush with natural pony bristles that is designed for precision blush application. From what I can tell this brush is quite flattened (width-wise), and not rounded like typical blush brushes (you can see the ferrule is flattened), although the end (at the bristles) is tapered. While many reviewers seem to love this brush, there are a number of reviews that say this brush is scratchy, and some think it is too small. Overall, I do not like the sound of scratchy, so this may be a riskier buy.

SUPERNOVABEAUTY Rating = 3/5 It’s not the best deal.

Perricone MD Cold Plasma+ Face

Price

Original: $179 CAD
Sale: $89 CAD

Rating on Sephora = 4.1/5

Quick Take

This is a face serum that is meant for all skin types to target the nine most visible signs of aging: loss of radiance, uneven texture, uneven tone, discoloration, redness, enlarged pores, lines, wrinkles, and loss of firmness. This product really seems to be controversial. Many users report great results with the continual use of this serum, such as reducing cystic acne, reducing the appearance of fine lines, and a decrease in texture. However, many people have reported the exact opposite effect, where skin texture was increased, lines became more obvious, and more breakouts were experienced. These results make me think that this product is likely not good for sensitive skin, and may have some strong ingredients. But overall, it doesn’t really sound worth the risk to me at a whopping $90 CAD.

SUPERNOVABEAUTY Rating = 2/5 Try at your own risk!

Murad Clarifying Cleanser

Price

Original: $36 CAD
Sale: $18 CAD
Percentage off: 50%

Rating on Sephora = 4.6/5

Quick Take

This is gel cleanser that is specially formulated to combat active acne and acne-prone skin by stripping away grime, oil and irritants. This cleanser also has 1.5% salicylic acid to treat and prevent future acne and menthol to soothe the skin. This cleanser has many five star reviews claiming that this was a cure to their acne, however, one or two people do report that this cleanser is too drying (which can often cause more breakouts). This product doesn’t have a ton of reviews, but overall people with acne-prone skin love it!

SUPERNOVABEAUTY Rating = 4/5 This could be a good buy.

  1. I thought this week’s sale is, for the most part, boring…again. Which I guess I’m fine with because my wallet is happy. I AM interested in the Tarte face palette, but I own that Tarte Pro Glow palette (that was on sale last week) – I bought it last year and I’ve barely used it! That means I probably shouldn’t get this one…haha. I like that the ABH lip products are BOGO, because I remember you being a huge fan of the glosses. I put myself on a lip product ban until I can use up a few of the lip products I already own, though!

    1. It is sort of boring. The brushes don’t totally interest me, and I don’t need/want either of those skin care products. I also am intrigued by the ABH BOGO. I think that’s a great deal and not something you often see at Sephora. I’m going to the Rouge event tonight (even though I know it will probably be just as lame as the last one), so I might pick up a few glosses then!
