Hello everyone! One year ago today I posted my very first post on SUPERNOVABEAUTY, My Origin Story. I originally started this blog in June 2017, but sat on it for quite a while, deciding whether I really wanted to go through with it or not. I had never thought that I would be the kind of person to start a blog.
To be honest, I started this blog because I felt that it would be necessary to actually start receiving free products through Influenster and other similar services. I know, it’s not the most upstanding thing to admit, but it’s true. I think most people would agree that receiving free products is a great perk, but it’s maybe not the best reason to get into a committed hobby like blogging.
However, I also think that deep down, I knew that it would be a great avenue to share my love and excitement for beauty products. At that time, I really didn’t have many friends that shared my level of interest in makeup, and blogging would open me to a whole new network of people. In late 2016, I received a rapid introduction to the beauty world, as prior to that I had only been subsisting on the bare minimum amount of makeup. I was a student, and that was all I could afford. However, once I became a grad student (they actually pay you, believe it or not [still at the poverty line though]) I had a little more to work with. If you have been following my blog for a while, you will know how my collection has grown from nothing to everything, in contrast!
Overall, I am pretty happy with how my blog has done over its first year. I really had no clue that I would keep this up this long. Clearly, the longevity is an indication that I do truly enjoy blogging, and I’m not just in it for the free products.
When asked which part of the blogging process I prefer the most: taking pictures, editing, writing up and compiling the post; I’ve most often said that none of it is my favourite. And I’m puzzled by this, because why do I continue to do it? The reality is, blogging is gruelling work, so why take on such a laborious hobby? What I truly do know is that there is a huge amount of gratification from people in the world receiving your work well. And blogging is certainly a lot of work! A post can take anywhere from 4-8 hours to compile in it’s entirety, if not longer. And sometimes, I post more than 3-4 times per week. Honestly, I’m not sure how I have done this for the last year while also nearing the completion of my Masters Degree. But when I see that a post has done well, and that people have even taken time out of their busy days to comment on it, all is right in the world, and my day has been made. That is why I blog.
Overall, statistics vary so much between blogs, it is ridiculous. I don’t know whether mine have been poor, average, or good over the first year, but there are so many variables that can control your blog’s performance. I think the main thing is how much you post, and I do typically post quite a bit. If things are going my way, I will post 3-5 times per week, which really drives views.
Ultimately, I had (notice the past tense) become very happy with my blog’s performance starting in March. Views were starting to look like they were increasing exponentially, which was really exciting. HOWEVER, I went away during May, which made my stats take a bit of a hit, and then I upgraded my WordPress account to Premium (because I was out of storage space for photos), which meant that I got to choose my own domain name. Fun right? And so official too. WELL BOY HAS THAT AFFECTED MY STATS AND I AM INCREASINGLY UNHAPPY WITH THIS CHANGE.
Sounds dramatic, but look at the difference in stats between May and June (pictured below). I upgraded June 8th, and my views have not been the same since. At this point though, I have come to the conclusion that things are just going to have to take some time to get back up. It largely has to do with search engines like Google. I have no clue how any of this works, but it just seems to take them time to start recommending your page to searchers. And after a while, I guess your page moves up in rank. But when I changed my domain name, I guess my credibility went back to zero. Or at least that’s what I think has happened. Regardless, I’ve had a month now to get over it, and I’ve maybe seen some slight progress in views, but not really. Kind of a sad note for my Blogiversary. But I have faith that things will improve. The content is there, people just aren’t seeing it yet.

It’s honestly surprising to see how posts can differ in their success with your audience. Most of my posts often don’t even hit 100 views, and then some get THOUSANDS. Why? For some, it’s obvious why, but the reasons for others allude me.

Taking a Look at my Blog Posts Through Time…
Overall, to say the least, things have really improved over this last year. Looking at my oldest posts, I find most cringe-worthy. Whether it be the editing was bad, or the quality was worse, you can at least say things have gotten better! (Right?!)
Let’s take a brief walk through each month of this last year. For most months, I have highlighted only one post that at the time was very important to me, and that I was proud of. Most highlight my attempt at creativity. I hope you see improvement where I do!
I remember being so proud of this post, especially with creating 6 eye looks! But boy oh boy did I fail myself with the editing. Some of those photos are so yellow! But I truly thought they were beautiful and well done at the time.
This was an awesome event and I hope that I get the chance to go to more of these!
This was an interesting experiment for me, as this was the first time I had ever dyed my hair, at home or professionally! I loved the outcome!
Nail art has always been my first true love, well before branching out further into makeup. Christmas time always brings out the creative juices in me.
This was the very first Palette Roulette I ever did! Overall, this has become a very successful and fun to do series, but it does take a ton of work. Lately, I haven’t had time, but I do hope that I can get back to it soon.
This was definitely one of the best VoxBoxes from Influenster that I ever received. And it was so exciting! Because usually Canadians don’t get sent new or high end items. But this was the start of a new era, and Influenster Canada has only been getting better.
I truly think that this eye look turned out well, and I love that I branched out for it. When I was creating it, I definitely had no idea whether it was going to work out or not. And that’s not the last time that I have felt that way, that’s for sure!
To be honest, I was and am still very proud of this post. The eye looks and the mani turned out exactly how I pictured them.
How My Blog Has Improved
Over this last year many things about my blog and I have improved. One of the first things that saw a change were my eyebrows. When I posted my first Youtube video, a troll immediately gave me a hard time about my eyebrows. And then it happened again on instagram, immediately. My first response was what the heck?! Why now, simultaneously, and from two different people? Up until that point, all I had ever received were compliments on my eyebrows; in fact they were my most complimented feature in person. At first, I ignored it (but also felt offended). Then I took a real hard look at myself to see what could possibly be wrong. Because while the troll criticized, they didn’t actually say what was wrong. Well, I decided that I had been dipping the front of them too low, and boy am I happy with how I have changed them! Older pictures of myself are absolutely cringe-worthy to me now. So thanks troll! I made lemonade out of your asshole-ery.
Another huge improvement has been my photo editing. I had always known about correcting image colour on the cool/warm scale, but I was still having issues with colour correcting images and didn’t know how to fix it. This was an especially big deal when taking up-close eye photos, where my lighting is quite warm, but can dip more red or yellow depending on the subject of the photo (blue or green eyeshadow is a hard one with an auto-lighting iPhone). Well man was I happy to discover another spectrum when I downloaded another free photo editor Photoscape X! Photoscape also allows you to change the purple/green spectrum, which has made a huge difference!! If your pictures are too red, you add more green to cancel it out. If your picture is too yellow, you add in more purple to cancel it out. Genius!!
Last month when I upgraded to a Premium account, I knew my Blogiversary was coming up, so I decided it was time to spruce up my blog. With its new updated aesthetic, I feel it looks a lot more professional and sleek. Branding is important, and I have finally done it. I hope that you have all liked the outcome!
What I Can Still Improve
While I can recognize that my blog has improved quite a bit, there are still so many things that I can aim to do better over the next year. One of these main improvements is dedicating more time to reading and commenting on other people’s posts. I enjoy it when people interact with my posts, and I know that I need to put more time into reciprocating on their blogs. And I do try, it’s just things are so busy, and I want to post more and more on my own blog! But, I recognize that this is a failing on my part, and I want to make a concerted effort to correct this over the next year. I hope that finishing my MSc degree at the end of the summer will give me more time to do this.
Something that I used to put time into, but has kind of dropped off my radar is putting together beautiful product photos. In my experience, nothing strikes someone more than a beautiful flat lay, and I’ve just been too lazy lately. I don’t really feel like creating flat lays come to me easily, and to be honest, it really hurts my back! After hours of putting together photos, my back is aching and I’m in a bad mood wondering if I have actually achieved anything worthwhile. But, I do really want to improve this skill, and there is a ton of inspiration out there to help me do so.
One thing that I need to improve upon personally is my outlook on blogging, and how I will be received when I tell someone that I am a beauty blogger. When I admit to acquaintances and people that I know in my personal life that I run a beauty blog, I am embarrassed, because I have the perception that for some reason I will be judged negatively for this. Why is there this inherent stigma with blogging? And how did it get into my head? Does anyone else experience this? After a year of running a blog, and one that I think is semi-successful at this point, why do I still feel this mark of shame? And it’s funny too, because when I have told people that I have a beauty blog, not one person has openly judged me or mocked me for doing so. So why do I still have a problem with it? Ultimately, I just need to get over it. If people want to judge me, there’s no changing their opinion anyways! The goal is to make myself happy, and I am doing that.
I am sure there are a million other things that I can improve upon, but this is my list for now.
Overall, I am happy with where my blog is at currently (with the exception of this latest dip in views [curses!!!!]). I have many plans for the future, but, I would love to know what you would like to see more of. While I blog for myself, I also blog for my audience. So if you have any kind of content that you would like to see more of from me, please let me know!
Ultimately, I believe in bloggers supporting bloggers, so please share all of your social media information in the comments below, so that we can all follow each other! The success of my blog would not be possible without dedicated readers, which clearly all of you are! This was a bloody long post!!! Hopefully you scrolled through some of it quickly. All jokes aside, thank you for taking time out of your day to read my reviews, my rambles, my creative attempts over this last year. It has been fun!
