Wow! or Waste? Urban Decay Born to Run Collection ✈️⛵️🌎

Hey everyone! Welcome back to Wow! or Waste? Whether a whole collection has been launched, or just a new product, I’m going to evaluate whether each product is either a Wow! buy or a Waste? of money, in terms of the price and the amount of product you get.

This time around we are evaluating the new Urban Decay Born to Run Collection, which launches on June 12, 2018 on the UD website and June 19th online at Sephora, Ulta and Macy’s. This collection will be in stores June 24th.

“Whether you’re a total road warrior, a weekend escapist or a staycationer—this is everything you need when you’re Born To Run.”

This newest collection by Urban Decay is focused all around travel, but being edgy at the same time. It includes a brand new, 21 shade eyeshadow palette, 3 new shades of Vice lipsticks, 3 eyeliners (2 new shades, one returning shade), and a special edition travel size of the All Nighter Setting Spray.

Price and Quantity

This eyeshadow palette is priced at $59 CAD ($49 USD) and has 0.42 oz of product. NOTE: The eyeshadow pans in this palette only have 0.02 oz, which is REALLY small. Like very small. Usually eyeshadow pans have 0.5-0.6 oz. So just as a warning, even though you are getting plenty of shades in this palette, if you use the same ones every time (the mattes, likely) you run the risk of hitting pan pretty quickly.

This palette includes a lot of jewel tones, along with warmer mattes. The colour-scheme of this palette is actually quite unique based on what is currently available on the market (with the exception of the warm-tones). Because of that, it is kind of hard to find palettes that compare well to this one. Therefore, the comparison is more to give you a frame of reference as to whether this palette has good value or not. If you are in love with these shades, then this is likely the palette to go with regardless of the value.

For the comparisons, I have chosen some high end palettes that are close-ish in shade range, as well as just some other palettes from companies that are popular.

Here are the comparisons listed from best value to worst value:

Rank Product Cost
($ CAD)
Quantity (oz) Number of Shades Cost-Quantity Ratio for 1 oz of product
1 Violet Voss Hashtag $60 1.2 20 $50/oz
2 Colourpop Perception $30 0.56 16 $54/oz
3 Huda Beauty Obsessions $35 0.45 9 $78/oz
4 Huda Beauty Desert Dusk $85 0.89 18 $96/oz
5 Too Faced Clover Eyeshadow Palette $59 0.48 16 $123/oz
6 Tarte Be A Mermaid & Make Waves Eyeshadow Palette $50 0.39 14 $128/oz
7 Urban Decay Born to Run $59 0.42 21 $140/oz
8 Anastasia Beverly Hills Subculture $55 0.28 14 $196/oz

Wow! or Waste? based on the amount of product that you get in this palette, it does not have a very good value, and is therefore a Waste? However, like I said earlier, the colour story is pretty unique with the jewel tones that are a little more on the grungy side, so you may just want to get this anyways. It comes in hard packaging, which is nice for travel. One palette that I did include in this comparison was the Colourpop Perception palette because I do think they are in the similar family of shades, and that one does have a better value (no surprise). But it is limited edition, so if that’s the one you would prefer, you better jump on it!

Born to Run Vice Lipstick

From top to bottom: 66, Marfa, Ready!

Product Information

“The perfect complement to our Born On The Run Eyeshadow Palette, these three brand-new, limited-edition shades of Vice Lipstick pair with anything from neutral to smoky and bright to sultry eye looks.

With three new lip colors, Born To Run Vice Lipsticks are designed to complement your everyday (and even the not-so-everyday) looks. Just one swipe provides an unbelievable laydown of color—with soft and supple texture, rich and even coverage, and long-lasting pigment. Urban Decay is 100% cruelty-free.”

Ready!: Bright rose sparkle (Matte)
66: Riche Mauve-nude (Comfort Matte)
Marfa: Dark berry with pink micro-shimmer (Comfort Matte)

Price and Quantity

These lipsticks are priced at $22 CAD ($18 USD) and have 0.11 oz of product. These lipsticks are the same as the regular Vice range, they are just new shades. Vice lipsticks have 6 different finishes, but these ones are comfort mattes (like a satin finish) and a matte. Therefore, I have chosen lipsticks that come in a similar finish and that have similar shades available.

Here are the comparisons listed from best value to worst value:

Rank Product  Cost
($ CAD)
Quantity (oz) Cost-Quantity Ratio for 1 oz of product
1 Kat Von D Studded Kiss Crème $23 0.12 $192/oz
2 Urban Decay Vice Lipstick $22 0.11 $200/oz
2 Bite Beauty Amuse Bouche $30 0.15 $200/oz
3 MAC Lipstick $22 0.1 $220/oz
4 Make Up For Ever Artist Rouge Lipstick $27 0.12 $225/oz
4 Tarte Color Splash Lipstick $27 0.12 $225/oz
5 Smashbox Be Legendary $25 0.1 $250/oz
6 NARS Lipstick $35 0.12 $292/oz

Wow! or Waste? These lipsticks actually have a pretty great value ranking at 2nd, so they are a Wow! This lipstick formula is personally my favourite, so I totally encourage you to try these. I love the Comfort Matte finish, but have not tried the Matte. I’m kind of confused by the fact that the extremely sparkly shade is a Matte? Like how does that actually look on? Anyways, I support these wholeheartedly. I own 28 shades I think… 👀 I’m not totally convinced that I’m going to get any of these even though I am usually a sucker for LE packaging. None of the shades totally wow me. If I were to get one, it would be “66”.

Born to Run 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencil

Product Information

“Creamy, forever-lasting, award-winning and waterproof, 24/7 pencils delight you with lush tropical hues, deep metallics, and unusually vibrant neutrals. The best Eye Pencil ever, ever, ever! Never before has a pencil this creamy and brilliant been waterproof, too. Velvety-soft, this never-before-seen formula stays soft and creamy for blending (about 30 seconds), then dries down to a long-lasting finish that WILL NOT budge.

Created with 50% moisturizing ingredients suspended in a sophisticated waterproof formula, 24/7 Eye Pencils offer long-lasting color and a dreamy, creamy feel when applied. With Jojoba Oil, Vitamin E and Cottonseed Oil.”

Overdrive: Deep green metallic
Double Life: Reddish-brown metallic
Lucky: Metallic burnt orange

Price and Quantity

These eyeliner pencils are priced at $25 CAD ($20 USD) and have 0.04 oz of product. These pencils are again, already an existing product within the UD line. However, 2 of these are brand new shades: Overdrive and Double Life. Lucky is a returning shade.

For comparison, I chose other high end eyeliner pencils that have colourful options.

Here are the comparisons listed from best value to worst value:

Rank Product  Cost
($ CAD)
Quantity (oz) Cost-Quantity Ratio for 1 oz of product
1 Sephora Collection Contour Eye Pencil 12hr Wear Waterproof $12 0.04 $300/oz
2 Natasha Denona Eye Liner Pencil $23 0.04 $575/oz
3 Urban Decay 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencil $25 0.04 $625/oz
3 Make Up For Ever Aqua XL Eye Pencil Waterproof Eyeliner $25 0.04 $625/oz
4 Marc Jacobs Highliner Gel Eye Crayon Eyeliner $31 0.01 $3,100/oz

Wow! or Waste? These eyeliners seem to rank very middle of the line, so they are really neither a Wow! or a Waste? However, in terms of the colour selection, UD outranks both of the products that are listed in 1st and 2nd place. The only other pencil eyeliner that competes with UD for colour selection are the Marc Jacobs Highliners, which have a way worse value. And I personally prefer the performance of UD pencils. That green is a very interesting shade too. I might have to pick that one up.

Born to Run Travel-size All Nighter Setting Spray

Product Information

“Is makeup meltdown ruining your midnight mojo? Mist on this weightless Urban Decay makeup setting spray to give your makeup serious staying power. All Nighter Makeup Setting Spray keeps makeup looking gorgeously just-applied for up to 16 hours— the best makeup setting spray to prevent makeup from melting, fading or settling into fine lines.

Yep, this baby actually lowers the temperature of your makeup to keep foundation, eyeshadow, blush and concealer in place—even in hot and humid or cold and windy conditions. The result? Smoother-looking skin and vibrant makeup that lasts all day (or all night).”

Price and Quantity

This travel spray is priced at $19 CAD ($15 USD) and has 1 oz of product. I think that it is really smart that they released a travel sized spray, since this is obviously a travel-inspired collection. This travel size was actually already available, but of course this one has special packaging.

There actually aren’t a ton of travel-sized sprays, so for comparison I just chose the high end ones that were available and that weren’t meant to be illuminating or anything (which All Nighter is not).

Here are the comparisons listed from best value to worst value:

Rank Product  Cost
($ CAD)
Quantity (oz) Cost-Quantity Ratio for 1 oz of product
1 MAC Fix + $14 1 $14/oz
2 Urban Decay Travel-size All Nighter $19 1 $19/oz
2 Kat Von D Lock-It Makeup Setting Mist Mini $19 1 $19/oz
3 Smashbox Photo Finish Primer Water Mini $20 1 $20/oz
3 Too Faced Peach Mist Mattifying Setting Spray Mini $20 1 $20/oz

Wow! or Waste? This travel spray is definitely on the Wow! side, although most of them are very comparable. The only spray with a stand out value is the Mac Fix+, but that formula is very different from UD All Nighter. Overall, this comparison shows you that since they are all very comparable in value, just buy whichever one that has your most favourite formula. I actually really do not like All Nighter, but I know it is a cult classic!

Overall Collection Value

Overall, this collection did very well on value. However, the one truly unique product that came out with this collection, the eyeshadow palette, was the item that had the worst value. Everything else released were already existing products within the line, they are just new shades.

When it comes to the eyeshadow palette, you will just have to decide whether you genuinely want those specific shades or not, and whether that overcomes the not-great value. Value also really doesn’t mean much when it comes to eyeshadow palettes, since usually you don’t hit pan on eyeshadow. Although I have! But overall, I think value just helps justify a purchase, and not necessarily determine whether you will get something or not.

Here is the overview of what we have learned through this Urban Decay Born to Run edition of Wow! or Waste?

Product Product Category Rank Within category Wow! or Waste?
Born to Run Eyeshadow Palette Eyeshadow Palette 7 Waste?
Born to Run Vice Lipstick Lipstick 2 Wow!
Born to Run 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencil Pencil Eyeliner 3 Neither
Born to Run Travel-size All Nighter Setting Spray 2 Wow!

  1. Heya 🙂 Did you actually get to play around with the shades?
I like what you did there with the price comparison and I think the price of the palette is just insane. Also, I find the whole colour story quite dark. I’ll be honest, though, these are just excuses for me to buy the Beach palette instead lol
    Keep up the good work

    1. I have not actually gotten my hands on the palette. I have seen one person use it on Youtube though, which you can find here
It looked like the mattes didn’t blend the best, although the reviewer didn’t mention that. Could have just been user error though.
The palette was surprisingly expensive for what you get! Bigger palettes like this are usually a good deal, but that’s because more product is usually included. The pan sizes in this palette are just so small!
The colour story is definitely dark! That was my first thought upon seeing it. It’s colourful, but almost grungy, which does not scream summer to me!

    1. I know, when I first saw it I was totally thrown off my the darkness of the colour scheme.. But I’m also slightly tempted at the same time. So I’m not sure what I feel lol.

    1. Thank you! It is pretty, but I share your sentiments! And if I’m not wowed by something from the beginning, then maybe I shouldn’t talk myself into it!

    1. Sweet that’s awesome! I’m slightly tempted to pick it up! I’m waiting for a local retailer to get it in so that I can use their loyalty program to get some money off (Shopper’s Drug Mart in Canada).
