Wow! or Waste? Fenty Beauty Beach Please Summer Collection

Hey everyone! Welcome back to Wow! or Waste? Whether a whole collection has been launched, or just a new product, I’m going to evaluate whether each product is either a Wow! buy or a Waste? of money, in terms of the price and the amount of product you get.

This time around we are evaluating the new Beach Please Summer collection from Fenty Beauty, which launches on May 21, 2018 at Sephora and on the Fenty Beauty website! This collection is definitely all about wearing a little colour in the summer. From highlighters to lip and lid toppers, Rihanna’s got you covered!

If you are curious about whether the items you are interested in are Wow! or Waste?please keep reading.

Killawatt Foil Freestyle Highlighter Duo

Product Information

“Weightless, longwear cream-powder hybrid highlighter duos with a hyper-metallic finish, born in a colorful range of rule-defying shades designed to make all skin tones pop.

Just when you thought Killawatt couldn’t get any better. Killawatt Foil Freestyle Highlighter Duo enters the highlight game with the same creamy texture of the original in a new, mega-reflective, foil-like finish. With intense metallic edge, these buildable, color-rich luminizers come in rule-defying shades that look equally killer on all skin tones. When it comes to choosing a shade, there’s no wrong answer.

Price and Quantity

These highlighter/eyeshadow duos are priced at $44 CAD ($36 USD) and have 0.24 oz of product. Something to note: these duos are $2 CAD more expensive than the original Fenty Killawatt Freestyle Highlighters.

Now for comparisons, I feel like this product can be assessed in two different ways. Obviously, they are being sold as highlighters, but because most of the shades are so unconventional, I feel that a lot of people will be buying them exclusively for use as eyeshadows. I know if I were to get any of these shades, it would be for eyeshadow, based on my personal preferences! So, what I have decided to do is compare these duos to highlighters, and then do a separate comparison to eyeshadows.

Here are the highlighter comparisons listed from best value to worst value. I chose a variety of palettes and singles that are on the more colourful side. Keep in mind that palettes typically have a better value for the price!

Rank Product Cost
($ CAD)
Quantity (oz) Number of Shades Cost-Quantity Ratio for 1 oz of product
1 Anastasia Beverly Hills Aurora/Moonchild Glow Kit $52 0.96 6 $54/oz
2 Becca Ocean Jewels Highlighter Palette $55 0.53 5 $104/oz
3 Urban Decay Disco Queen Holographic Highlighter Powder $36 0.31 1 $116/oz
4 Ciate London Mermaid Glow $38 0.32 6 $119/oz

Too Faced Rainbow Strobe Highlighter

$38 0.28 5 $136/oz
6 Fenty Killawatt Freestyle Highlighter $42 0.28 2 $150/oz
7 Becca Shimmering Skin $46 0.28 1 $164/oz
8 Fenty Killawatt Foil Freestyle Highlighter Duo $44 0.24 2 $183/oz
9 Kat Von D Metal Crush Extreme $48 0.24 3 $200/oz

Here are the eyeshadow comparisons listed from best value to worst value. Again, I included various sizes: trios, duos and singles.

Rank Product Cost
($ CAD)
Quantity (oz) Number of Shades Cost-Quantity Ratio for 1 oz of product
1 Fenty Killawatt Foil Freestyle Highlighter Duo $44 0.24 2 $183/oz
2 Smashbox Photo Edit Eye Shadow Trio $26 0.11 3 $236/oz
3 Kat Von D Metal Crush Eyeshadow $25 0.1 1 $250/oz
4 Anastasia Beverly Hills Eye Shadow Single $16 0.059 1 $271/oz
5 NARS Duo Eye Shadow $43 0.14 2 $307/oz
6 Urban Decay Eyeshadow $24 0.05 1 $480/oz

Now, there is one other way I could break this down: cost per shadow. However, I think that it is pretty obvious that $44 CAD for 2 shades is extremely expensive, so I won’t go there!

Wow! or Waste? When compared to other highlighters, whether we are talking single-pans or palettes, these highlighters do not have good value and are therefore a Waste? However, when compared to eyeshadow trios, duos and singles, they are a Wow! I would say take this with a grain of salt though, since I think paying $44 for only two shades is a ridiculous price. But you get a ton of product, which is why the value for the money you pay is so high.

Because most of these shades are so unique, value really might not enter into the equation, since there really aren’t going to be any dupes out there. So do what your heart tells you! For me personally, because the shades are so unique, I would use them less. So even if there is a ton of product, the price probably wouldn’t be worth it for me!

Island Bling 2-in-1 Liquid Eye Shimmer

Product Information

“A limited-edition, double-ended, liquid eyeshadow, featuring metallic shimmer on one end and an iridescent glitter topcoat on the other.

Double-dip into summer’s ultimate treasure, where there’s more than meets the eye. Island Bling 2-in-1 Liquid Eye Shimmer brings together two different finishes in one convenient, dual-ended design. It delivers sleek, metallic shimmer on one side and an iridescent glitter topcoat on the other. Wear them solo, or layer together to create a brand-new, hyper-prismatic shade.

Price and Quantity

These liquid eyeshadow duos are priced at $33 CAD ($26 USD) and have 0.28 oz of product. For the most part, liquid eyeshadows don’t really seem to be on trend, with the exception of the Stila Glitter/Shimmer & Glows. But who knows, maybe they are making a comeback! The shades are actually pretty basic, which is surprising. For comparisons I just chose a selection of other liquid eyeshadows sold at Sephora.

Here are the comparisons listed from best value to worst value:

Rank Product Cost
($ CAD)
Quantity (oz) Number of Shades Cost-Quantity Ratio for 1 oz of product
1 Fenty Island Bling 2-in-1 Liquid Eye Shimmer $33 0.28 2 $118/oz
2 Touch In Sol Metallist Liquid Foil & Glitter Eye Shadow Duo $28 0.19 2 $145/oz
3 Urban Decay Liquid Moondust Cream Eyeshadow $29 0.17 1 $171/oz
4 Make Up For Ever Star Lit Liquid $30 0.15 1 $200/oz
5 Stila Shimer & Glow $31 0.15 1 $207/oz

Wow! or Waste? When compared to other liquid eyeshadows at Sephora, these are actually a total Wow!, and by a good amount too! Because these are such basic colours, I do think that duping them would be relatively easy. But, since they are a Wow! there’s no need (unless you want to go drugstore, which is cool too). I’m honestly not that attracted to these, but the Mamacita/Tini Kini duo does look very pretty!

Iridescent Lip Luminizer Trios

Summer Daze

Summer Nights

Product Information

“A limited-edition trio of creamy, shade-shifting lip luminizers laced with pearlescent color for a sheer wash of island-inspired hues.

Trick the light this summer with the limited-edition Summer Daze and Summer Nights Iridescent Lip Luminizer Trios. These creamy, color-flipping lip glosses feature a unique sheer formula that makes it possible to rock wild, island-inspired colors like never before.”

Price and Quantity

These lip trios are $40 CAD ($32 USD) each and have 0.3 oz of product (each lip gloss has 0.1 oz). To compare I just chose other lip toppers and lip glosses at Sephora. Again, these shades are very unique, so these comparisons are not as accurate as they could be. Because, how can you even compare value, when it’s the shade that you want? Regardless, check it out below.

Here are the comparisons listed from best value to worst value:

Rank Product  Cost
($ CAD)
Quantity (oz) Cost-Quantity Ratio for 1 oz of product
1 UD Hi-Fi Shine Ultra Cushion Lip Gloss $23 0.23 100/oz
2 Fenty Iridescent Lip Luminizer Trios $40 0.3 133/oz
3 Urban Decay Vice Special Effects Long-Lasting Water-Resistant Lip Topcoat $24 0.16 150/oz
4 Becca Glow Lip Gloss $27 0.18 150/oz
5 Huda Beauty Lip Strobe $23 0.14 164/oz
6 Bite Beauty Prismatic Pearl Crème Lip Gloss $25 0.14 179/oz
7 Marc Jacobs Enamoured $35 0.16 219/oz
8 Too Faced Magic Crystal Lip Topper $24 0.1 240/oz

Wow! or Waste? When compared to other lip toppers and glosses, these actually turn out to be a Wow! However, I think one obvious obstacle with this product is that you have to shell out $40 to get whichever shade you want, plus maybe one or two that you would never wear. I’m sure some people could be interested in all three shades in whichever trio, but I kind of doubt everyone would be happy with all of the shades, which is really too bad. $40 is a big investment to not be totally happy with what you are getting, and I am sad that they decided to sell these this way. Clearly because they knew the blues and greens wouldn’t sell that well.

I, personally was excited when I saw that she was working on another gloss because I really love her Gloss Bomb. But I will not be purchasing either of these sets, because I just don’t wear greens or blues on my lips! Sorry, not sorry!

Overall Collection Value

Overall, this collection actually did well. However, that was accompanied with a lot of ifs, ands or buts. Because the majority of the products in this collection are very unique in shade, value comparisons really can’t be the only part of the decision-making process. Ultimately, you will have to decide whether you are willing to shell out for some fun shades, and if you are, that’s awesome! Makeup is all about having fun, so have some.

Here is the overview of what we have learned through this Fenty Beauty Beach Please Summer Collection edition of Wow! or Waste? Please note that I have included the Killawatt Foil Freestyle Highlighter Duo twice in the table below since we assessed it in two different ways.

Product Product Category Rank Within category Wow! or Waste?
Killawatt Foil Freestyle Highlighter Duo Highlighter 8 Waste?
Killawatt Foil Freestyle Highlighter Duo Eyeshadow 1 Wow!
Island Bling 2-in-1 Liquid Eye Shimmer Liquid Eyeshadow 1 Wow!
Iridescent Lip Luminizer Trios Lipgloss/Topper 2 Wow!

  1. My biggest pet peeve with Fenty is the color choices, I won’t use these colors on a daily basis. Therefore, that makes me not want to buy them? I like that she’s going out of the box, but I think she goes tooo out of the box. in my opinion at least.

    1. Exactly. I feel the same way. Just means all of her launches don’t grab me, which is totally ok. Since there are a million other products that I want haha.

  2. Thanks for a very informative post! I bought a couple of Fenty products and haven’t gotten around to reviewing anything yet but I like the brand so far. I am looking forward to watching what they do in the future. I think the prices are a little bit too high though. Anyways, I enjoyed the post. ❤️

    1. Thanks so much! What I have purchased from Fenty, I have loved. However, their releases lately have just not interested me. It may just be that the shades are too exciting 😛 But someone has to be different!

  3. Eek those are some expensive highlighters! I would probably use them as eyeshadows too, I wouldn’t know how to wear those colours on my cheeks. The lip toppers are interesting to me, but still out of my comfort zone.

    1. I don’t think we are exciting enough to use those highlighters on our faces 😛 But yeah, as eyeshadows, I’m not going to pay $22 per shade, haha. Even though I am the tiniest bit tempted because they do look pretty. If she were to come out with smaller sizes in the future that were intentionally meant to be shadows, I would be into it! I feel like the lip toppers are a total miss, mainly because you have to spend so much money, and then you are stuck with three. No thanks.
