Hello everyone! Today I wanted to do an overview of the KL Polish Ethereal Garden Collection. I have been collecting KL Polish nail polishes since the Fall 2017 collection came out, and I have really come to love them. So without further adieu, let’s jump right in!

overall

About KL Polish

KL Polish is a brand that was started by the very popular Youtuber Kathleen Lights just over a year ago. All KL Polish nail polishes are cruelty free, at least 5-free, if not 5/7/9-free, and made in the USA using a high-quality, long-lasting, non-chip formula. All of the polishes in the Spring collection are also advertised as vegan.

5-free means that these polishes are free of: Formaldehyde, toluene, DBP, formaldehyde resin, and camphor. 7/9-free means that they are free of even more toxic chemicals.

My thoughts on the KL Polish Formula

As soon as I first tried the KL Polish formula, I knew I was hooked.

  1. First off, the brush is a reasonable width: not too skinny and not too wide. This is important to me, since so many brushes are so thin that you have to go over the nail many many times to get full coverage (Essie is the worst culprit of this), which makes it more difficult to not get a streaky finish.
  2. The polish is pretty quick drying! For a polish where I always use two coats, this dries pretty quick.
  3. The formula is pretty chip-resistant. I notice that my manicure last noticeably longer when I am wearing KL Polish.

The only drawback with KL Polish is the price is verging on luxury, for nail polishes. By the time everything is said and done, I’ve bought the box set and paid for shipping, the polishes end up being around $12 CAD per bottle. This is more expensive than OPI polishes at some retailers. OPI! Arguably the most well known nail polish brand out there. So, I immediately expect more from these polishes. And they do deliver. I prefer KL Polish to OPI.

KL Polish prices have recently increased from $8.50 USD to $9.50 USD each. The box sets have also increased from $45 USD to $49.95 USD. To me, this is not really a big deal. They have introduced a VIP program that actually keeps the price the same for people who were already loyal customers and subscribed to her newsletter, which I was, so I have been provided with a discount code. I’m not entirely sure whether it’s a one time use code or what, but I will save it for the summer launch.

One problem I have though, is that my Spring Collection box arrived totally damaged, which has never happened before. I have purchased the last three collections, and they have always come well packed in a box. This time, the collection arrived in a soft bubble mailer envelope. Literally NO PROTECTION! The result was my box arriving totally mangled, bent and crushed with the plastic form holding the nail polish cracked. All of the nail polishes arrived alive, and I have managed to bend the box into somewhat of a normal shape, but I was EXTREMELY disappointed with the quality of the shipping. Why the change? I might also add, that I paid $14 USD for shipping, which is supposed to be expedited (and it wasn’t fulfilled until 9 DAYS after I ordered; also very disappointing). How does $14 shipping not pay for a box? I find that price very expensive for shipping ($18 CAD!!!), since I usually on principal hate paying for any amount of shipping. Overall, I was just very disappointed.

My main point is that I do not mind paying higher prices for products that I think are superior, but when I pay a high price for the product AND for shipping, I expect the items to arrive all in one piece. Even though it was only the box that was broken this time, who’s to say the actual products won’t be damaged next time? Also, I keep the boxes to display, and the whole point of the box is that it is a collectors item. So it matters to me, even if it’s just a box to someone else. I paid for that box!!

Anyways, let’s get into the shades in this collection!

Selene

Selene is described as a “muted yellow with silver microglitters” with a crème finish. I actually find this shade quite mustardy when not in direct light, so I am still unsure about it. I prefer more pastel-y yellows, if I’m going to wear a yellow at all. Also, the silver microglitter does not show up at all on the nails. You can only see it in the bottle. So what was the point of adding it?

Gum Would Be Perfection

gum would be perfection

Gum Would Be Perfection is described as a “bubble gum pink” with a crème finish. This is a very pretty shade of pink, and I actually don’t already own a pink quite this shade, so it’s perfect! Such a beautiful and girly shade for spring, or all year round!

Miss Kensington

Miss Kensington is described as a “mint green with a hint of aqua” with a crème finish. I think this mint green is so nice! It is seriously the colour of mint ice cream, and I love love it! I can’t wait to do a full mani with it. I just ran through a whole bottle of China Glaze Re-fresh Mint, and I’m glad to replace it with this one, because I like this shade better!

Dream Boy

dream boy

Dream boy is described as a “blurple” (blue-purple) with a crème finish. The shade comes off more on the blue-side to me, but I can definitely see a touch of purple in there. It is definitely a unique light blue shade, leaning on the periwinkle side. Very pretty!

Charmed

Charmed is described as a “magenta duo chrome with a blue flip” and has a duo chrome finish. This shade is S-T-U-N-N-I-N-G! Absolutely the show stopper of the collection. It runs a little sheer, but I am happy with the opacity with two coats.

One coat of Charmed on top of two coats of Dream Boy. This definitely makes the polish come across more opaque, and it made charmed come off slightly deeper magenta.

Pinky

pinky

Pinky is described as a “sheer peachy pink” with a crème finish. In theory, I was unsure about this polish because I didn’t like the sound of “sheer”. Well, with two coats, this polish is slightly sheer, but not so sheer that it bothers me at all. In fact, I really like the look of it! You can slightly see the change from the white of my free edge, to the nude of my nail bed, but it’s not terribly noticeable.

Thoughts on this collection

Something that I swear that I am noticing, but still not quite sure about, is that some of these polishes feel thicker than usual. Thicker polishes can be more difficult to work with, which I did notice slightly, but it wasn’t a huge deal. I might be imagining this, but probably not, because why would I suspect a change in the first place?

Overall, I think the shades chosen are great for spring! I’m still not sure about Selene, but every other colour is gorgeous and I am so happy to add them to my collection. One thing I didn’t like as much though were the campaign photos that she did for this collection. The pictures are all from very far away, so you can barely see the nail colour in them, and I just don’t like the soft filter on them. It again, makes it difficult to make out the colours! What’s the point if the nails aren’t the star of the show in campaign photos? Just a little different from past collections, but not a big deal by any means!

Have you tried out the KL Polish formula? What is your favourite shade from the collection? Let me know down below!

  1. This is such a pretty collection of shades! I haven’t really been interested in KL polishes due to the price tag but the shades in her spring release are gorgeous. Selene probably is not everyone’s cup to tea, but I think it’s really unique and surprisingly flattering! And Charmed was definitely the one that caught everyone’s attention out of the set, haha.

    1. The price is certainly up there. I mean, to be charging more than OPI…? But the formula is way better than OPI, so I am happy to indulge once per season. I just don’t really buy any other nail polish anymore (and I don’t need to because I have so many lol). Selene is certainly unique! Next time I wear it, I’m going to put it on top of a white base to see if that makes it a little less mustardy. It looks fine in these photos, but when you are wearing it inside it is VERY mustardy. Charmed is so nice! And yes, the show stopper!

  2. I agree with Selene, I was just wearing it this last week and I can’t tell if I like it. The only shade I haven’t tried is Pinky, but I love all the others! Charmed is definitely the prettiest of them all and my overall favorite. What top coat do you use with them? I’ve noticed some base coats I’ve been trying are changing the color of them.

    1. I actually really love Pinky! I’m not usually into nude nails, but that combo with Das Esspensive XXVI was so pretty and perfect for spring! I would absolutely wear them over and over. I always use the Orly Bonder Rubberized Base Coat and the Seche Vite Dry Fast Top Coat! I hope that helps!

      1. I didn’t grad the second Das Esspensive, which I really regret, but I hope I like Pinky!
        Thanks for the recommendations love!
