Hourglass Vanish Flash Highlighting Stick | Review + Swatches

Hello everyone! TGIF, TGIF.. I chant as I roll into work. Although that means nothing, now that I have vowed to work every weekend until my thesis is finished… sigh. Oh well, it’s all for a good cause!

Today I am bringing you the last of my long promised reviews! Forever I have been leading you on about these highlighters, and it is finally time to discuss them! With the final half of the Sephora Sale being this weekend, this review might prove to be a timely reminder about my FAVOURITE highlighters on the market, the Hourglass Vanish Flash Highlighting Sticks.

Packaging and First Impressions

Hourglass is a luxury brand, so it is fitting that the packaging is very sleek and expensive-looking. These cream highlighters come in an extremely mirrored, silver, triangular component. Inside, the product can be rolled up and down by twisting the base. When looking at the highlighter inside, it doesn’t appear to be extremely shimmery or glittery. It just looks like a coloured cream.

This highlighter comes in 5 shades: Champagne Flash, Pink Flash, Rose Gold Flash, Gold Flash and Bronze Flash. I own the first three shades listed.

Price and Quantity

These highlighters are priced at $52 CAD ($42 USD) and have 0.21 oz of product. For comparison, I chose other popular high end and luxury cream highlighters.

Here are the comparisons listed from best value to worst value:

Rank Product  Cost
($ CAD)
Quantity (oz) Cost-Quantity Ratio for 1 oz of product
1 Milk Makeup Highlighter  $29 1 $29/oz
2 Natasha Denona Face Glow Cream Shimmer  $54 0.84 $64/oz
3 Too Faced Peach Frost Melting Powder Highlighter  $38 0.44 $86/oz
4 NARS The Multiple  $49 0.5 $98/oz
5 Marc Jacobs Glow Stick Glistening Illuminator  $53 0.49 $108/oz
6 Benefit Watt’s Up! Cream-to-Powder Highlighter  $40 0.33 $121/oz
7 Fenty Beauty Match Stix Shimmer Skinstick  $31 0.25 $124/oz
8 Cover FX Enhance Click Highlighter  $24 0.17 $141/oz
9 Hourglass Vanish Flash Highlighting Stick  $52 0.21 $248/oz
10 RMS Beauty Living Luminizer  $48 0.17 $279/oz

As you can see, these Hourglass cream highlighters do not have very good value, ranking at 9 out of 10 different cream highlighters. However, Hourglass is a luxury brand, therefore this is not entirely unexpected. Because of this, the product better be freaking amazing to be worth your money… Well, let’s see!

Here are the claims from the Hourglass website:

“An instant flash of light to the skin in 5 brilliant shades for unparalleled glow. These mesmerizing highlighters share the same innovative, weightless texture of Vanish™ to give you the most seamless, lustrous highlight to the skin. Instant payoff, effortless blendability and longwearing luster all in a sleek, portable stick for an instant flash of light anytime, anywhere.

• Formulated with hollow microspheres for the most weightless feel on the skin
• Formed in a unique triangular bullet for precision application.

Pigmentation and Performance

Those who are regulars on my blog will already know that I think that these highlighters are well worth your money! What also makes that clear is the fact that I now own three of these…

When swatched, these highlighters definitely come off quite pigmented, and you can see the clear sheen that they will give. There is no glitter at all, just a really fine shimmer. I would say that the shades that I own are true to their name, although Rose Gold pulls more on the rose side of things.

To apply, I swipe the highlighter directly on a damp sponge, and then apply with the sponge. I have not tried to apply directly with the stick, for fear of moving around my base layers. If you have tried the Fenty Match Stix, I would say that these Hourglass Sticks are less stiff (being too stiff was a major problem that I had with the Fenty Match Stix, making them impossible to apply easily). This highlighter applies so gorgeously on top of both liquid foundation and powders. Even if you set your face, you can still use these highlighters with no problem! The result is a beautiful wet sheen that initially looks quite natural, but can REALLY be built up to be blinding. I will usually go over my cheekbones twice to really give it that pop.

Once on, the cream definitely sets down over time and I have never had it move on me. And the best part is that this highlighter doesn’t add or emphasize any extra texture. It literally makes your skin shine, instead of sitting on top of your skin to give you that shine. It totally melts into your skin. The other amazing this is that these highlighters are incredibly long lasting. I have never experienced any fading throughout the day!

Wearing Champagne Flash

When preparing for this review I did take pictures of me wearing each shade, but unfortunately the shade differences really didn’t show up on camera. The camera just recognizes it as light bouncing off unfortunately! You need to swatch them and try them in store to see the differences, but they are obvious in real life.

Final Thoughts

Overall, I totally think that these highlighters are worth your money. I am not usually a luxury product person, but I am freaking obsessed with them, and I always get so many compliments when I wear them.

My favourite shade is Champagne Flash, because it works so well for every day, but Pink Flash is a very pretty and interesting shade that I like to wear when I am wearing cooler colours. I initially purchased Rose Gold worried that it would be too deep (but I bought it anyways because I am obsessed with anything rose gold), but that shade actually totally camouflages into my skin, and I don’t think it is too deep at all! That shade is really beautiful to give you a shine that doesn’t really have a distinct gold or pink colour. It is very neutral, at least for my skin tone. Remember, because you apply these with your fingers or a sponge, the colour doesn’t go on nearly as pigmented as it does in a swatch.

There are not many products that I say that you NEED IN YOUR LIFE. BUT YOU NEED THESE IN YOUR LIFE! If you are going to get any luxury items this weekend in the last half of the Sephora Spring Sale, let it be one of these highlighters!
