Valentine’s Day 2018 | Physician’s Formula Healthy Lip Velvet Liquid Lipstick

Hello everyone! Valentine’s Day is quickly approaching and I want to take out some time to do some posts specific to this holiday of love and roses. In yesterday’s post I shared with you my picks for presents for your Gal’s on Galentine’s Day, and the day before that I reviewed the Marc Jacobs Cream and Sugar Nude Lip Trio, a trio that will give you the perfect nude lip. Please check out those posts if you haven’t already!

Today I will be reviewing for you a liquid lipstick that is both beautiful and comfortable, the Physician’s Formula Healthy Lip Velvet Liquid Lipstick.

I first heard about these on Youtube from a few people that I follow, but most notably JAMbeauty89. You should definitely check her out. Jessica is so down to Earth and easy to watch! Anyways, I recently placed a big-ish Ulta order (you will see a haul post soon), and I decided to throw these in since there was a sale of buy one Physician’s Formula product, get another half off (and it looks like this deal is still active as of Feb 9!)! So why not try these lippies, that are said to be a liquid lipstick that is ACTUALLY comfortable?! I don’t know about you, but that sounds right up my alley.

Packaging and First Impressions

These liquid lipsticks come in a classic plastic tube that is rectangular with a shiny silver cap and detailing. The packaging actually looks quite nice and almost expensive (which Physician’s Formula is for the drugstore). Inside is a triangular doefoot applicator that is hollow in the center, so it tends to hold some product. The formula seems to be more on the mousse-y side, rather than liquidy. I didn’t notice any scent to this lip product.

This liquid lipstick comes in 13 different shades, ranging from nudes to bright pinks, berries and reds. The two shades that I purchased were “Bare With Me”, a warm nude and “Dose of Rose”, a medium rose pink.

Price and Quantity

On the Physician’s Formula website these liquid lipsticks are priced at $7.95 USD, however, because this is a drugstore item, price varies by a lot depending on the retailer. Taking a quick look, this product is sold for $6.95 USD at Ulta in the USA. In Canada, this product is sold at London Drugs for $10.99 CAD, and at Shopper’s Drugmart for $13.99 CAD.

These liquid lipsticks have 0.1 oz of product. I usually do not do value comparisons for drugstore products, mainly because the prices of these products are not standardized. They are different basically everywhere you go, so it is basically impossible to be to do an accurate value comparison. However, to give you a general idea of how much product you are getting compared to other popular liquid lipsticks, whether they be drugstore or high-end, here is a table comparing the amounts.

Rank Product Quantity (oz)
1 Too Faced Melted Matte 0.4
2 Kat Von D Everlasting 0.22
3 L’Oreal Infallible Pro-Matte Liquid Lipstick 0.21
4 Huda Beauty Liquid Matte 0.17
5 Maybelline Matte Ink 0.17
6 bareMinerals GEN NUDE 0.13
7 Fenty Beauty Stunna 0.13
8 Stila Stay All Day 0.1
9 Physician’s Formula Healthy Lip 0.1

As you can see, not only do you have high end brands ranking at the top with the most product included in their liquid lipsticks, but there are also drugstore brands with quite a bit. Unfortunately, this Physician’s Formula liquid lipstick has basically the least amount of product with these comparisons. But, the price isn’t bad, and if the formula is amazing, it is probably worth it! Like I said, I bought these at buy one, get one 50% off, so that is a good time to purchase something like this.

Here are the claims from the Physician’s Formula website:

“What It Is:

Long-wearing, decadent mousse-like texture lipstick delivers high-impact color that glides on for seamless one-stroke color payoff.

Why It’s Good for You:

The light-weight, cream formula features beauty miracle-worker, avocado oil that hydrates and moisturizes, while hyaluronic acid smooths and enhances lips overtime for a healthy beautiful pout.

Key Ingredients:

Avocado Oil, Vitamins A & E, Hyaluronic Acid, Anti-Aging Peptides”

Pigmentation and Performance

Overall, I really agree with the claims of this product. The texture is definitely mousse-y and lightweight. When first applied, it feels so comfortable on your lips, and not at all dehydrating, even when it dries down a few minutes later.

Application with the doefoot was also incredibly easy. Because of the pointed tip, it was easy to line your lips and then apply within that line. I definitely prefer to start with less product on the applicator, so scrape off what you can from the doefoot, and then apply.

The pigmentation of the liquid lipstick is really great. Again, this matches the claim that you get basically full pigmentation with one swipe. I definitely agree with this, although I do like to go over my lips a few times, out of habit, just to make sure that everything is very even.

Because this liquid lipstick is the mousse type, it is not transfer-proof. However, even though it does transfer through drinking and eating, the pigmentation lasts on your lips really well. I found that I really didn’t have to retouch a lot through the day.

As I said before, this liquid lip is very comfortable, and it remained comfortable up until around the 6 hour mark. At that point it did start to feel a little drying, but it was by no means unbearable. In fact, at the 6 hour mark it started feeling like any other liquid lipstick. So that is a success indeed.

Here are some swatches and lip swatches of the shades that I purchased.

Final Thoughts

Overall, this is a great liquid lipstick for people who want the lasting power, but need their lip products to be comfortable. It has great pigmentation, and the available shade range is pretty good! Even though these liquid lipsticks have less product included in them, I will definitely be looking into purchasing more of these, simply because I love the formula.

  1. Love your post, so in-depth! These are such beautiful colors and like you said, perfect for Valentine’s Day! I’ll have to pick these up, especially since you said they’re pretty comfortable.

  2. I love both of these colors! They seem right up my alley. I like that they are super comfortable too, I’ll have to check them out!

  3. I haven’t noticed these lipsticks at the drugstore yet. They’re super pretty though! In the swatches, I thought I would like Dose of Rose more, but then I saw your lip swatch and Bare with Me is just as pretty! I hate how expensive PF is for a drugstore brand though 😛
