Wow! or Waste? Becca Ocean Jewels Collection 🐚💎

OCEANJEWELS-HP-Banner-Desktop_02

Hey everyone! Welcome back to Wow! or Waste? Whether a whole collection has been launched, or just a new product, I’m going to evaluate whether each product is either a Wow! buy or a Waste? of money, in terms of the price and the amount of product you get.

This time around we are evaluating the new limited edition Ocean Jewels Collection by Becca. Honestly, when I first saw that this collection was in the works I was pretty interested. Everything looked so beautiful and summery. I love ocean themes, obviously (did you know that I study Marine Biology?). But I thought it was for summer!! Why is this collection being released right now, in the dead of winter?? I know it’s not winter everywhere, but for the majority of North America, it is very much winter, and Becca is a US based company.

So, this release strikes me as kind of strange… I guess we can use this collection as an excuse to dream of summer when we are shivering cold in the rain and snow. It’s ok, you aren’t cold, just apply this tropical lip gloss, *shivers*. Ok, well maybe that doesn’t work. However, we can still appreciate the beauty of a good cosmetics collection. The real question is, is it worth it??

“The Ocean Jewels Collection captures the magic of light shining on the ocean’s shimmering surface. The light dances through the waves and illuminates the hidden gems that lie in the depths of the ocean – creative a glistening light show for the senses.” – Becca Cosmetics

Price and Quantity

This highlighter palette is priced at $55 CAD ($46 USD) and has 0.53 oz of product.

For comparison I chose both colourful and regular highlighter palettes. I also included how many shades were in each palette. Something that I noticed as I was drawing up the comparisons is that this palette looks like a duller version of the ABH Aurora Glow Kit. What do you think? Honestly, I like the look of Aurora better, but maybe this Becca one is more wearable.

Here are the comparisons listed from best value to worst value:

Rank Company’s Product Mentioned Above Cost
($ CAD)
Quantity (oz) Number of Shades Cost-Quantity Ratio for 1 oz of product
1 Huda Beauty 3D Highlighter Palette $59 1.19 4 $49.6/oz
2 Anastasia Beverly Hills Sugar Glow Kit $52 1.04 4 $50/oz
3 Anastasia Beverly Hills Aurora/Moonchild Glow Kit $52 0.96 6 $54/oz
4 Tarte Skin Twinkle Lighting Palette Vol II $50 0.7 4 $71/oz
5 Becca Ocean Jewels Highlighter Palette $55 0.53 5 $104/oz
6 Smashbox Spotlight Palette $40 0.3 3 $133/oz
7 Kat Von D Metal Crush Extreme Highlighter Palette $48 0.24 3 $200/oz
8 Kevyn Aucoin Prismagic Highlighting Trio $60 0.21 3 $286/oz

Wow! or Waste? I would say that this palette is a Waste? Ranking at number five, there are both wearable and colourful palettes that have more value than this one. And again, I think not only does Aurora look better and more colourful (if that is what you are going for), but it also has better value! In fact, it has two times the value!

Price and Quantity

This eyeshadow palette is priced at $42 CAD ($35 USD) and has 0.49 oz of product.

For comparisons, I chose mostly smaller sized palettes, since larger palettes typically have a better value.  However, I have also included some regular sized/larger palettes that have a sort of similar colour scheme. This palette is basically a bunch of neutrals with a purple thrown in, so that is what I looked for.

Here are the comparisons listed from best value to worst value:

Rank Company’s Product Mentioned Above Cost
($ CAD)
Quantity (oz) Number of Shades Cost-Quantity Ratio for 1 oz of product
1 Huda Beauty Obsessions $35 0.45 9 $78/oz
2 Kat Von D MetalMatte Mini Eyeshadow Palette $53 0.6 10 $88/oz
3 Becca Ocean Jewels Eye Palette $45 0.49 7 $92/oz
4 Tarte Tartelette in Bloom $60 0.636 12 $94/oz
5 Huda Beauty Desert Dusk $85 0.89 18 $96/oz
6 Too Faced Chocolate Gold $59 0.54 16 $109/oz
7 Smashbox Cover Shot: Eye Palettes $35 0.27 8 $130/oz
8 Tarte Tartelette Tease $30 0.18 6 $167/oz

Wow! or Waste?  I was actually surprised at how not terrible the value of this palette was. With how big and clunky it is (or luxe and over-sized, whatever you prefer), for the amount of shadows that you get, I was expecting it to have less value. Overall I would say that this is neither a Wow! or a Waste?, but it is very comparable in value to other eyeshadow palettes that have more shades. So you will have to decide whether you want a smaller, more carefully curated palette, or a palette that includes more eyeshadow shades and gives you more versatility.

Price and Quantity

This lip gloss is priced at $30 CAD ($25 USD) and has 0.16 oz of product.

This lipgloss is incredibly expensive, and therefore I find it hard to justify purchasing this myself. Even though I am a lipgloss lover and it sounds very pretty and cool. But there are a ton of sheer pink glosses out there, so here are some comparisons to other glosses at Sephora!

Here are the comparisons listed from best value to worst value:

Rank Company’s Product Mentioned Above Cost
($ CAD)
Quantity (oz) Cost-Quantity Ratio for 1 oz of product
1 Fenty Beauty Gloss Bomb $23 0.3 $77/oz
2 ABH Lipgloss $21 0.16 $131/oz
3 Buxom Full-on Lip $24 0.15 $160/oz
4 Huda Beauty Lip Strobe $23 0.14 $164/oz
5 bareMinerals GEN NUDE $23 0.13 $176.92
6 Becca Liptuitive Glow Gloss $30 0.16 $187.50
7 Marc Jacobs Enamoured $35 0.16 $218.75

Wow! or Waste? Well I’m not surprised, but this lip gloss is a total Waste? !! I mean, it’s less expensive than Marc Jacobs, but is that really saying anything when Marc Jacobs is bordering on a luxury brand? While the idea of this lipgloss is really cool, with it being colour changing, it seems that the actual outcome is literally just a sheer pink gloss. You can certainly get a better value gloss at Sephora, let alone at the drugstore! Namely, the Fenty Beauty Gloss Bomb at Sephora is an absolutely beautiful sheer pink gloss with the slightest of shimmer to it, and it is the best value gloss on this list. I highly recommend that gloss.

My Thoughts on the Collection

Ocean Jewels Highlighter Palette. Honestly, the packaging is pretty nice, but the shades are so lackluster to me. If you are someone who is going to go for a crazy coloured palette, don’t you really want to go for it? The packaging is pretty, but I’m just not into these crazy shades, and if I were to branch out and get some colourful highlighters, I would get the better value and more vibrant option: ABH Aurora Glow Kit.

Ocean Jewels Eye Palette. I must admit, I am slightly tempted by this palette. But, it is definitely not anything new or life-changing. We have seen these duochrome shades before, and it only has two mattes, so the versatility is really not there. That being said, I really do enjoy smaller more curated palettes, since bigger palettes with 20+ colours can be overwhelming at times. But, this palette is just too large and clunky for me. I’m sure in person it is beautiful and luxe, but I do wish that the arrangement was more space-conscious.

Liptuitive Glow Gloss. My interest was also slightly piqued at this gloss, but the price is simply outrageous. I am not going to pay $30 for a sheer pink gloss, and I really hope that you won’t either.

Overall Collection Value

Overall, this collection has not done well in terms of the value. While I haven’t done full reviews of each product, and cannot therefore speak to the performance of each item, so many from this collection are not priced appropriately for the amount of product you get.

If you get something from this collection, it will be because you have fallen in love with the packaging or the specific shades. Follow your dreams! But I will not be purchasing anything from this collection. Also, it’s winter for me!! I am not really in the mood for beachy things!

  1. The packaging is gorgeous!! I really love the look of that lipgloss, but the price is crazy. Ugh. I also love that purple shade in the eye palette. I don’t know, I kinda want to buy them, but I don’t. 😂

    1. I feel your feel! I think getting the eyeshadow palette would be fine, but don’t get it for just one shade! That’s totally what companies are banking on when they make an all neutral palette and then they throw in one show stopper. Get a pretty purple single or something lol 😅 anyways, I totally support you if you get the palette! That lipgloss though.. they took that price too far.

      1. Yeah I know what you mean! They definitely just want people to buy for the purple. The prices are crazy sometimes, I don’t get it. ☹️
