If you don’t already know, I recently purchased the Sephora Favorites Give Me Some New Lip Kit, which actually includes a mini size of the Fenty Beauty Mattemoiselle Plush Matte Lipstick in the shade “Candy Venom”, as well as four other lip products. You can read my overview of that Sephora Favorites kit here, if you haven’t already.
But, after writing that post, I thought, why not do a full review on the Fenty Beauty lipstick? This lipstick was so hyped up until its release, so is it worth it, after all of that?
“Rihanna loves changing up her lipstick depending on her current mood, so she wanted to create a lipstick collection that would empower everyone to explore new looks. She hand-picked the range of 14 shades that anyone can pull off, with shade names that embody the personality of each color.”
“Lipstick is all about having fun and expressing your mood at any given moment. This collection makes it easier than ever because there’s a color for everyone.” – Rihanna
Packaging and First Impressions
The packaging of this lipstick definitely matches the rest of her collection, in that it is simple, reflective, metallic and angular. This is a very slimly designed lipstick. The tip of the lip product has the Fenty Beauty initials engraved into it, and the lipstick itself looks very matte.
This lipstick comes in 14 matte shades that span the rainbow. I have the shade “Candy Venom”, which is described as an “electric pink”.
Price and Quantity
This lipstick is priced at $23 CAD ($18 USD) and has 0.06 oz.
Let’s compare to the Fenty Beauty Starlit Hyper-Glitz Lipstick ($24 CAD/0.045 oz), the Urban Decay Vice Lipstick ($21 CAD/0.11 oz; read my review of this product here),the Anastasia Beverly Hills Matte Lipstick ($23 CAD/0.12 oz), the Bite Beauty Amuse Bouche Lipstick ($30 CAD/0.15 oz) the Tarte Rainforest of the Sea Color Splash Lipstick ($27 CAD/0.12 oz; read my review of this product here), the Smashbox Be Legendary Lipstick ($25 CAD/0.10 oz) and the Too Faced Peach Kiss Moisture Matte Long Wear Lipstick ($25 CAD/0.14 oz; read my review of this product here).
Here are the comparisons listed from best value to worst value:
|Rank||Company’s Product Mentioned Above||Cost
|Quantity (oz)||Cost-Quantity Ratio for 1 oz of product|
|1||Too Faced Peach Kiss Moisture Matte||$25||0.14||$179/oz|
|2||Anastasia Beverly Hills Matte Lipstick||$23||0.12||$192/oz|
|3||Urban Decay Vice Lipstick||$22||0.11||$200/oz|
|4||Bite Beauty Amuse Bouche Lipstick||$30||0.15||$200/oz|
|5||Tarte Color Splash Lipstick||$27||0.12||$225/oz|
|6||Smashbox Be Legendary Lipstick||$25||0.1||$250/oz|
|7||Fenty Mattemoiselle Plush Matte||$23||0.06||$383/oz|
|8||Fenty Starlit Hyper-Glitz Lipstick||$24||0.045||$533/oz|
Unfortunately, this lipstick has a really terrible value. Not as terrible as the Starlit Hyper-Glitz Lipstick, but still very bad compared to other lipsticks on the market. It’s so strange because so far Fenty has offered really reasonable prices. However, the amount of product is just not there, and maybe they think we won’t notice, but we should. When they are giving us about half the amount of product that is the norm, that’s really not so great. Additionally, their lipglosses actually have great value! So it is definitely confusing how some products can have great value, while others have absolutely terrible value! Clearly we need to be paying attention to these things.
Here are the claims from the Fenty Beauty website:

Pigmentation and Performance
Overall, I think the description of this lipstick is very accurate. It applies in a very thin layer that makes it feel like you are wearing absolutely nothing on your lips. Immediately after application you can slightly move around the product, but it does dry down completely. Application was also very easy, as the product was not too stiff, and the tip was rounded and small enough to make application around the cupid’s bow very accurate.
The most amazing part about this lipstick is that it is sooo pigmented! For the shade that I have, “Candy Venom”, you definitely get full opacity with only one layer. This colour is a very saturated bright pink. But as it fades, it starts to look a little bit more red on me.
While this lipstick is not transfer proof, it still looks just as pigmented on your lips after hours of transfer. It kind of sinks into your lips to become like a stain, but it is still easy to remove when you want to with makeup remover/micellar water.
I will be honest and say that this is a pretty dry matte lipstick. I did notice my lips feeling pretty dry after a couple hours of wear, and I kept catching myself licking my lips, which is a clear sign of discomfort for me. However, it wasn’t unbearable, it’s just not the most comfortable matte lipstick I own. If you do not have problems with dry lips, then this would be a great lipstick for you.
Overall, I think that this is a pretty good matte lipstick if you are looking for pigmented and unique shades. It has great lasting power and definitely gives your lips a velvety matte look. However, if you struggle with dry lips like me, you may not enjoy wearing this lipstick so much.
