Wow! or Waste? Urban Decay X Kristen Leanne Collection

Screen Shot 2018-01-06 at 9.36.04 PM.png

Hey everyone! Welcome back to Wow! or Waste? Whether a whole collection has been launched, or just a new product, I’m going to evaluate whether each product is either a Wow! buy or a Waste? of money, in terms of the price and the amount of product you get.

This time around we are evaluating the new limited edition Urban Decay X Kristen Leanne Collection. If you don’t already know, Kristen Leanne is a cruelty free YouTuber, beauty blogger, model and business owner. She has almost 500K subscribers on Youtube, and is the founder of Arctic Fox Hair Color, a cruelty free and vegan hair dye company. If you don’t know Kristen, she almost always has vividly coloured hair and daringly bright makeup. She is also covered from head to toe in tattoos. She is the epitome of bad ass, and I love it.

I probably started following Kristen Leanne on Youtube a couple of months ago. I really like her. She has a very straightforward and truthful, but still fun, personality, which really resonates with me. I really admire her makeup looks that she creates, and she is just beautiful. It is also very inspiring that she only uses cruelty free brands. Therefore, I was really interested when I heard that she was coming out with a collaboration with Urban Decay, one of my favourite beauty brands!

As a sort of disclaimer, obviously if you are a huge fan of Kristen Leanne and you want to support her and her collaboration, absolutely get the products that you want to get. I am only drawing attention to their value in terms of the pricing and how much product is included. Whether each product is a Wow! or Waste?, this is no reflection on Kristen Leanne herself, since in collaborations like this, usually only the colours are customized by the collaborator, not the pricing. I’m sure she had no control over that.

Alright, let’s get into it! If you are curious about whether the items you are interested in are Wow! or Waste? please keep reading.

The UD X Kristen Leanne Collection

“This is what makeup dreams are made of. The UD x Kristen Leanne collection epitomizes everything we love about KL, from her passion for makeup to her whimsical vibe.

Kristen embodies the UD spirit inside and out—from her colorful hair and killer tattoos to her super-authentic, down-to-earth personality. A UD junkie and a big advocate of self-expression, she also has a distinct point of view that we completely dig. Working with Kristen was a total blast and a true collaborative effort.” – Urban Decay

“Three fast facts about Kristen Leanne: COLOR JUNKIE. FREE SPIRIT. OVER-SHARER. No wonder we get along so well! We tapped into Kristen’s amazing makeup talent and discovered what inspires her. Then we bounced color ideas back and forth until we created her perfect makeup collection.” – Urban Decay

Kaleidoscope Dream Eyeshadow Palette

Screen Shot 2018-01-06 at 10.46.28 PM

Product Information

“The limited-edition Kaleidoscope Dream Eyeshadow Palette features 11 vibrant shades, including a uniquely shifty yellow, vivid brights, and an out-of-this-world split-pan duotone. Each shade is named after something close to Kristen’s heart, like LCW (a nod to KL’s fave song, “Long Cool Woman in a Black Dress,” by the Hollies), and 13th Floor (one of her favorite Twilight Zone episodes). Every shade has a velvety texture, rich color, serious staying power and blendability.

Shades included:

SPITFIRE (bright pink satin with purple shift)
STAY GOLD (metallic yellow-gold)
TAJIN (orange matte)
LCW (metallic teal blue)
TRM (metallic deep navy blue)
LEO + BRIXTON (holographic green pearl shift + holographic red-green pearl shift)
LIME TIME (metallic neon green)
13TH FLOOR (black matte)
DYE (violet satin)
CORONA (metallic soft bronze with gold shimmer)”

Price and Quantity

This eyeshadow palette is priced at $50 CAD ($39 USD) and has 0.34 oz of product.

The colour scheme of this eyeshadow palette is very unique, in that the majority of eyeshadow palettes out right now are more neutral or warm-toned.  Therefore, it was a little difficult to do an accurate comparison, but I have chosen some palettes that have some brighter colours. I have also included the number of shades in each palette, so that you can see how comparable each one is.

I have included one palette that has a lot more shades, the Sephora Pro Editorial Palette, just because it does have a lot of brighter colours. But just for full disclosure, larger palettes usually have a better value than smaller palettes, so we can almost expect it to be a better deal than this UD X KL one.

Here are the comparisons listed from best value to worst value:

Rank Company’s Product Mentioned Above Cost
($ CAD)
Quantity (oz) Number of Shades Cost-Quantity Ratio for 1 oz of product
1 Urban Decay Distortion Eyeshadow Palette $65 0.9 15 $72/oz
2 Sephora PRO Editorial Palette $85 1.12 28 $76/oz
3 Huda Beauty Obsessions Eyeshadow Palette (Electric) $35 0.45 9 $78/oz
4 Kat Von D MetalMatte Mini Eyeshadow Palette $53 0.6 10 $88/oz
5 Too Faced Chocolate Gold Eyeshadow Palette $59 0.54 16 $109/oz
6 Viseart Editorial Brights $100 0.84 12 $119/oz
7 Kristen Leanne X UD Kaleidoscope Dream $50 0.34 11 $147/oz

Wow! or Waste? Unfortunately, this eyeshadow palette is a Waste? The fact that a Viseart palette is a better deal is very surprising, since that is an expensive brand. If you are looking for a brightly coloured eyeshadow palette, then I would probably pick any of the first three in this list. I’m not sure why there is so little product in the Kaleidoscope Dream palette, but that has really affected its value. But again, if you are absolutely taken with that particular colour scheme, and want to support Kristen Leanne, you go for it. I really do hope that these shadows are out of this world in pigment and quality! But there are more affordable and valuable options out there.

Daydream Eyeshadow Palette

Product Information

“When she’s not dropping amazing rainbow makeup tutorials, Kristen creates the dreamiest neutral eye looks. Loaded with five new shades, the limited-edition Daydream Eyeshadow Palette is her go-to for matte perfection. Plus, every shade has a velvety texture, rich color, serious staying power and blendability.

Shades included:
LUCY (ivory matte)
DAYDREAM (soft nude matte)
12/12 (soft peach matte)
SUBSCRIBE (warm nude matte)
EIGHT (rich warm brown matte)”

Price and Quantity

This eyeshadow palette is priced at $35 CAD ($26 USD) and has 0.1 oz of product.

If you can’t already tell, that is a very very VERY small amount of product! I’m not sure I’ve seen an eyeshadow palette for sale before that has such a tiny amount of product! When I read that that was how much was in there, I thought it had to be a mistake!

Since this palette is a smaller one, I have tried to include mini and regular sizes palettes for comparison. I have also chosen palettes that have neutral/warm shades. Luckily, there are plenty of those right now! I have also included the UD X KL Kaleidoscope Palette in here so you can see how her two palettes compare.

Here are the comparisons listed from best value to worst value:

Rank Company’s Product Mentioned Above Cost
($ CAD)
Quantity (oz) Number of Shades Cost-Quantity Ratio for 1 oz of product
1 Huda Beauty Obsessions (Warm Brown) $35 0.45 9 $78/oz
2 Kat Von D MetalMatte Mini Eyeshadow Palette $53 0.6 10 $88/oz
3 Tarte Tartelette Toasted $60 0.636 12 $94/oz
4 TF Just Peachy Mattes $55 0.48 12 $115/oz
5 Smashbox Cover Shot: Eye Palettes (Ablaze) $35 0.27 8 $130/oz
6 Kristen Leanne X UD Kaleidoscope Dream $50 0.34 11 $147/oz
7 Tarte Tartelette Flirt $30 0.18 6 $167/oz
8 Kristen Leanne X UD Daydream $35 0.1 5 $350/oz

Wow! or Waste? Unfortunately, this palette has TERRIBLE value and is a total Waste?!!! I have never seen a palette with such a small amount of product, and to be priced so high too! This is why we need to be paying attention to what we are actually getting for the price of beauty products. While I totally love the shades in this palette, and was even considering getting it, I just can’t justify it. But again, if you are absolutely taken with that particular colour scheme, and want to support Kristen Leanne, you do you. I just really can’t recommend it.

Beauty Beam Highlight Palette

Screen Shot 2018-01-06 at 10.44.40 PM

Product Information

“Kristen digs highlighter almost as much as she digs Mexican food. After bonding over our shared love of tacos, we got down to work on her ultimate highlighter palette, Beauty Beam Highlight Palette. Wear these golden shades individually, or cocktail two or three for a custom glowy effect. Stay gold, Foxes.

Shades included:
soft rose-gold pearl
white-gold pearl
warm golden pearl”

Price and Quantity

This highlighter palette is priced at $45 CAD ($34 USD) and has 0.38 oz of product. For comparison, I chose other highlighting palettes that have mostly neutral shades.

Here are the comparisons listed from best value to worst value:

Rank Company’s Product Mentioned Above Cost
($ CAD)
Quantity (oz) Number of Shades Cost-Quantity Ratio for 1 oz of product
1 Huda Beauty 3D Highlighter Palette $59 1.19 4 $50/oz
2 UD Afterglow Highlighter Palette $45 0.6 4 $75/oz
3 MUFE Artist Face Color Trio Palette (Customizable) $56 0.51 3 $110/oz
4 Kristen Leanne X UD $45 0.38 3 $118/oz
5 Smashbox Spotlight Palette $40 0.3 3 $133/oz

Wow! or Waste? Again, this highlighter palette is definitely not that great in terms of value, so I would consider it a Waste?. What a bummer this is turning out to be. Although, the shades in this palette truly look stunning! And value hasn’t always stopped me before, since I do own both of the Smashbox Spotlight Palettes. But, if you want to be smart about which highlighting palette you get, I would of course recommend one of the better value ones above. I actually have no idea what the Urban Decay Highlighter formula is like, so I hope it is really nice for this price and product amount!

UD X Kristen Leanne Vice Lipsticks

Cloud9, Spellbound, Bun Bun

Screen Shot 2018-01-06 at 10.45.02 PM

Product Information

“Is there a lipstick Kristen Leanne can’t pull off?! Doubtful. Since we couldn’t create every shade she wanted, we helped her choose her must-have matte shades of Vice Lipstick. There’s Bun Bun, a nude comfort matte (and the nickname of Kristen’s bunny, Brixton), Cloud9, a magenta comfort matte, and Spellbound, a deep plum mega matte.

Our creamy, addictive Vice formula applies smoothly (without dragging or skipping), hugs lips, and feels amazing. And the pigment load is insane! Vice Lipstick features our proprietary Pigment Infusion System™, which gives the formula its super-creamy texture, rich payout and superior color dispersion. Yummy Butter Blend comforts, hydrates and enhances, leaving lips soft and conditioned, never dry.”

Price and Quantity

The UD X Kristen Leanne version of the Vice lipsticks are priced the same as regular Vice Lipsticks: $22 CAD ($17 USD) and they have 0.11 oz of product. If you have read only a few of my posts, you may not know that I am TOTALLY OBSESSED WITH UD VICE LIPSTICKS (I have 26 of them). Read my posts about them here and here.

Unfortunately, sometime in the last couple of months the Vice lipstick price went up by a dollar for Canadians (but has stayed the same in the US), likely due to our dollar getting worse and worse (or the US dollar getting better and better in comparison; god damn), so this has affected the value for Canadians slightly. UD Vice would have been ranking at 2, but now it is in 3rd rank due to the price change in Canada.

For comparison, I have chosen lipsticks that are mostly matte, as the ones that Kristen Leanne customized are Comfort Matte or Mega Matte finishes.

Here are the comparisons listed from best value to worst value:

Rank Company’s Product Mentioned Above Cost
($ CAD)
Quantity (oz) Cost-Quantity Ratio for 1 oz of product
1 Too Faced Peach Kiss Moisture Matte $25 0.14 $179/oz
2 ABH Matte Lipstick $23 0.12 $192/oz
3 UD X KL Vice Lipstick $22 0.11 $200/oz
3 Bite Beauty Amuse Bouche $30 0.15 $200/oz
4 MAC Lipstick $22 0.1 $220/oz
5 Tarte Color Splash Lipstick $27 0.12 $225/oz
6 Smashbox Be Legendary $25 0.1 $250/oz
7 Fenty Mattemoiselle Plush Matte $23 0.06 $383/oz

Wow! or Waste? Even though these lipsticks are now ranking at #3, I still consider these lipsticks sort of a Wow! I think ranking third place out of seven is not bad at all, and I find the Vice lipstick formula to be far superior to the Too Faced Peach Kiss Moisture Matte and Anastasia Beverly Hills Matte Lipstick formulas. Both of those separate out of the lines in my lips, which looks terrible. Also the ABH Matte formula is so drying and stiff. It’s awful, in my opinion. So for me, UD Vice really ranks as number one, as I would never consider either of those other lipsticks.

I think if you want to support Kristen in this collection, the best way to do that is to get one or a few of these lipsticks. I personally ordered the nude shade, “Bun Bun”!

Forgive, Forget, Pulse

Screen Shot 2018-01-06 at 10.45.17 PM

Product Information

“These are Kristen’s very own shades of our long-lasting liquid lipstick that we put together in one set. A must-have for any lipstick junkie, the Vice Liquid Lipstick Duo features two ultra-flattering neutrals that look great on any skin tone.

You could say that Kristen has a thing for gray. (Have you seen how awesome she looks with gray hair?!) She was dying to create her own cement shade of lipstick, and together we made it happen with an exclusive shade of Vice Liquid Lipstick. A gray you didn’t think you could wear, this cool-toned shade is surprisingly flattering (named Pulse, inspired by KL’s love of jellyfish, which pulse in the water).

Our high-tech formula provides longer-lasting wear with ZERO transfer. Like our original formula, Vice Liquid Lipstick lays down intensely pigmented color. And the comfortable, nondrying wear sets it apart from other liquid lipsticks.”

*** For some reason the UD X KL Vice Liquid Lipstick in “Pulse” has not shown up on the Canadian Urban Decay website, so I am not sure if Canadians will have access to this particular product, or if it is just delayed.***

Price and Quantity

The UD X Kristen Leanne version of the Vice Liquid Lipsticks are priced the same as regular Vice Liquid Lipsticks. But in this collection, there is a duo set that you can get, as well as a single. The liquid lipstick set is priced at $29 CAD ($29 USD) and the single liquid lipstick is priced at $24 CAD ($18 USD). All of them contain 0.17 oz of product each.

If you didn’t notice, for some reason the liquid lipstick set for CAD and USD is priced the same… with only a 5 dollar difference between the single and the set for Canadians. This has got to be a mistake. They should have increased the price for Canadians proportionately, so I say purchase sooner rather than later before they notice! LOL!

Here are the comparisons listed from best value to worst value:

Rank Company’s Product Mentioned Above Cost
($ CAD)
Quantity (oz) Cost-Quantity Ratio for 1 oz of product
1 Too Faced Melted Matte $25 0.4 $63/oz
2 UD X KL Vice Liquid Lipstick Set $29 0.34 $85/oz
3 Kat Von D Everlasting Liquid Lipstick $24 0.22 $109/oz
4 UD X KL Vice Liquid Lipstick (single) $24 0.17 $141/oz
5 Huda Beauty Liquid Matte $26 0.17 $153/oz
6 bareMinerals GEN NUDE $23 0.13 $177/oz
7 Fenty Beauty Stunna $30 0.13 $230/oz
8 Anastasia Beverly Hills Liquid Lipstick $26 0.11 $236/oz
9 Stila Stay All Day $29 0.1 $290/oz

Wow! or Waste? While the value of the UD X KL set for Canadians is definitely a Wow!, the UD X KL Vice Liquid Lipstick in “Pulse” that you can get is nothing special, in terms of value. I would say that that one is neither a Wow! nor a Waste?. But if you are looking for the perfect cement grey shade, this might be it for you. If you like the UD Vice Liquid Lipstick formula, you should definitely get the set. They look like nice shades. But I haven’t actually tried the UD liquid lipstick formula, so I really can’t give an opinion.

UD X Kristen Leanne Eyeshadow

Screen Shot 2018-01-06 at 10.25.03 PM

Product Information

“To complete the collection, there’s an exclusive mustard yellow shade of Eyeshadow that Kristen just can’t live without. Named “S.G.H,” this shade is a reference to one of Kristen’s favorite songs, “Sister Golden Hair,” by America. And like all our shades, S.G.H. has a velvety texture, rich color, serious staying power and blendability.

Insane color payout. A velvety, suede-like smoothness and blendability. Our mind-blowing formula delivers unmatched performance in a stunning array of shades.

THE FORMULA
• Soft, amazingly velvety texture
• Rich, dense and decadent color
• Smooth, uniform pigment distribution and blendability
• Long-lasting, crease-free wear”

*** For some reason the UD X KL Eyeshadow in “S.G.H” has not shown up on the Canadian Urban Decay website, so I am not sure if Canadians will have access to this particular product, or if it is just delayed.***

Price and Quantity

This single eyeshadow is priced at $24 CAD ($19 USD) and has 0.05 oz of product.

Single shadows are often pretty expensive, as you usually get more product than what is found per shade in an eyeshadow palette.

Here are the comparisons listed from best value to worst value:

Rank Company’s Product Mentioned Above Cost
($ CAD)
Quantity (oz) Cost-Quantity Ratio for 1 oz of product
1 Kat Von D Metal Crush Eyeshadow $25 0.1 $250/oz
2 Tarte Tartiest Metallic Shadow $18 0.07 $257/oz
3 Anastasia Beverly Hills Eye Shadow Single $16 0.059 $271/oz
4 Make Up For Ever Artist Color Eye Shadow $22 0.08 $275/oz
5 Buxom Bar Single $15 0.05 $300/oz
6 NARS Single Eyeshadow $31 0.07 $443/oz
7 UD X KL Eyeshadow $24 0.05 $480/oz
8 Urban Decay Moondust Eyeshadow $26 0.05 $520/oz

Wow! or Waste? It looks like Urban Decay Eyeshadow singles are very highly priced for the amount of product you get, so this one is a Waste? This is another case where if you are in love with this unique shade, or you love the UD formula, or Kristen Leanne, then indulge yourself. But there are so many more affordable and valuable eyeshadow options out there.

Overall Collection Value

Overall, this collection has not done very well in terms of the value. While I haven’t done full reviews of each product, and cannot therefore speak to the performance of each item, so many from this collection are not priced appropriately for the amount of product you get.

So, when deciding whether you are going to purchase items from this collaboration, you will have to decide what is important to you. Is it product value? Or supporting Kristen Leanne and getting some of her beautiful products? If you do decide to purchase some of her items, I really hope that they perform impeccably!

    1. Yeah I personally really don’t like the layout of the kaleidoscope dream palette. I get that they are trying to be innovative and different, but it’s just not that pleasing to the eye. Thanks for reading! ☺️
