Hey everyone! Welcome back to Wow! or Waste? Whether a whole collection has been launched, or just a new product, I’m going to evaluate whether each product is either a Wow! buy or a Waste? of money, in terms of the price and the amount of product you get.

This time around we are evaluating the new limited edition Too Faced Chocolate Gold Collection, which launched on Too Faced’s website on Friday Dec 11th and is launching on Sephora Dec 15th.

“Go ahead, give in. Indulge all your senses. Experience ethereal luxury like nothing you’ve seen before!” – Too Faced

Chocolate Gold Eye Shadow Palette

Screen Shot 2017-12-08 at 10.50.20 AM.png

Product Information

“Take decadence to the next level with a luxurious gold and cocoa powder-infused eye shadow palette that smells as good as it looks. Have a major metallic moment with foiled shadows that are created with real gold for an epic high-shine finish that’s paired with rich, seductive mattes for coffee to cocktails wear. All shadows feature a soft, velvety texture with full coverage payoff. The entire palette is infused with skin-loving cocoa powder for a decadent chocolate scent.

  • Metallic shades infused with real gold for extra luxe sparkle
  • Creamy matte shadows offer soft, velvety wear
  • Infused with our signature chocolate scent for a mood boost with every swipe
  • Richly pigmented colors offer one-swipe payoff”

Price and Quantity

This palette is priced at $59 CAD ($49 CAD) and has 0.54 oz of product. As is typical with these chocolate bar palettes, 2 shades have 0.07 oz of product, and the remaining shadows have 0.03 oz of product.

For price comparison I chose eyeshadow palettes that are newly released for the holidays. The Urban Decay Heavy Metals Metallic Eyeshadow Palette ($72 CAD/0.6 oz/20 shades), the Natasha Denona Eyeshadow Palette 5 – Holiday Edition ($61 CAD/0.4 oz/5 shades), the Anastasia Beverly Hills Prism Palette ($55/0.28 oz/14 shades), the Kat Von D Saint & Sinner Eyeshadow Palette ($83 CAD/0.96 oz/24 shades), and the Fenty Beauty Galaxy Eyeshadow Palette ($69 CAD/0.69 oz/14 shades).

Rank Company’s Product Mentioned Above Cost ($ CAD) Quantity (oz) Number of Shades Cost-Quantity Ratio for 1 oz of product
1 Kat Von D Saint & Sinner $83 0.96 24 $86/oz
2 Fenty Beauty Galaxy $69 0.69 14 $100/oz
3 Too Faced Chocolate Gold $59 0.54 16 $109/oz
4 UD Heavy Metals $72 0.6 20 $120/oz
5 ND Palette 5 $61 0.4 5 $153/oz
6 ABH Prism $55 0.28 14 $196/oz

Wow! or Waste? I think this palette is neither a Wow! nor a Waste? If anything it is a little more on the Wow! side, because you do get so many different eyeshadow shades. This palette is majority shimmer/metallic shades, with 4 matte shades, so you will have to decide whether that is what you are looking for. However, looking at the matte shades, they are perfect for building up the crease, which is exactly what you need matte shades for. So overall, I think that this palette is a winner, in that it isn’t all shimmer/metallic unlike some of the other holiday releases (Urban Decay Heavy Metals Eyeshadow Palette and Fenty Beauty Galaxy Eyeshadow Palette), but it is certainly still festive!.

Screen Shot 2017-12-08 at 10.45.15 AMScreen Shot 2017-12-08 at 10.50.40 AM

  • Multi-use for face and body
  • Long-wearing for 8 hours of glowing skin”

Price and Quantity

This bronzer is priced at $38 CAD ($30 USD) and has 0.28 oz of product.

For price comparison I chose some popular bronzers offered at Sephora: The Too Faced Chocolate Soleil Bronzer ($38 CAD/0.35 oz), the Too Faced Sweethearts Bronzer ($38 CAD/0.19 oz), the Marc Jacobs O!Mega Bronzer Perfect Tan ($59 CAD/0.8 oz), the Benefit Hoola Matte Bronzer ($38 CAD/0.28 oz), the Becca Sunlit Bronzer ($46 CAD/0.25 oz), the NARS Sun Wash Diffusing Bronzer ($52 CAD/0.28 oz) and the Hourglass Ambient Lighting Bronzer ($63 CAD/0.39 oz).

Rank Company’s Product Mentioned Above Cost ($ CAD) Quantity (oz) Cost-Quantity Ratio for 1 oz of product
1 Marc Jacobs O!Mega Bronzer $59 0.8 $74/oz
2 TF Chocolate Soleil $38 0.35 $109/oz
3 TF Chocolate Gold Soleil $38 0.28 $136/oz
3 Benefit Hoola Matte Bronzer $38 0.28 $136/oz
4 Hourglass Ambient Lighting $63 0.39 $162/oz
5 Becca Sunlit Bronzer $46 0.25 $184/oz
6 NARS Sun Wash Diffusing $52 0.28 $186/oz
7 TF Sweethearts Bronzer $38 0.19 $200/oz

Wow! or Waste? This product seems to be on the edge of Wow!, in tie for 3rd place with the Benefit Hoola Matte Bronzer. I always like to compare Too Faced bronzers against each other, since they all seem to be priced the same, but actually have very different amounts of product included. Isn’t it bizarre how they can be ranked at the top and bottom of the scale, in terms of value? Their regular chocolate soleil bronzer definitely gives you more bang for your buck, but if you are looking for a bronzer that also gives you a shimmering golden glow, this might be a great option for you!

Melted Gold Liquified Lip Gloss

Product Information

“Drench your lips in the sexy decadence of pure gold. Our liquid foil formula takes on new life as a turned-up, epic, high glitter-lipped moment when any light shines on it. It’s buildable, easy-to-wear, and infused with real gold! Raise the gold bar by applying 2-3 layers of melted GOLD for maximum shine and decadence.

  • Infused with real gold for extra luxe sparkle
  • Turned-up gold foil formula takes lips from high-shine to sexy decadence with every swipe
  • Doesn’t dry down to matte, stays shiny and glittery
  • Buildable formula that amplifies any time light shines on it”

Price and Quantity

This lip gloss is priced at $25 CAD ($21 USD) and has 0.24 oz of product. I want to take a second to point out that all lip products from their Melted line (melted matte, melted liquefied and melted latex) have 0.4 oz of product. This lip gloss seems to be the exception, with almost half the product (for the same price as usual). However, with that being said, when comparing the amount of product in Too Faced’s Melted products to other companies, they usually win in value by a landslide (typical amount of product for a liquid lip product, whether it is gloss or lipstick is 0.10-0.20 oz).

For price comparison I chose some popular lipglosses, some of which are my own personal favourites (ABH 100%): Anastasia Beverly Hills Lip Gloss ($21 CAD/0.16 oz), Marc Jacobs Enamoured Hi-Shine Lip Lacquer Lipgloss ($35 CAD/0.16 oz), Fenty Beauty Cosmic Gloss Lip Glitter ($24 CAD/0.34 oz), Fenty Beauty Gloss Bomb Universal Lip Luminizer ($23 CAD/0.3 oz), the Buxom Full-on Lip Gloss ($24 CAD/0.15 oz), and the bareMinerals GEN NUDE Buttercream Lipgloss ($23 CAD/0.13 oz).

Rank Company’s Product Mentioned Above Cost ($ CAD) Quantity (oz) Cost-Quantity Ratio for 1 oz of product
1 Fenty Beauty Cosmic Gloss $24 0.34 $71/oz
2 Fenty Beauty Gloss Bomb $23 0.3 $77/oz
3 Too Faced  Melted Gold $25 0.24 $104/oz
4 ABH Lipgloss $21 0.16 $131/oz
5 Buxom Full-on Lip $24 0.15 $160/oz
6 bareMinerals GEN NUDE $23 0.13 $177/oz
7 Marc Jacobs Enamoured $35 0.16 $219/oz

Wow! or Waste? Well, I would say that this lipgloss is pretty Wow!, despite the fact that it has less product than typical Too Faced Melted items. The Fenty Beauty lipglosses have particularly good value (in stark contrast to the Fenty lipstick; check out that Wow! or Waste?), so ranking just below them is pretty acceptable. Overall, this lipgloss might be a great thing for you to try if you are looking for a sparkly gold lip. However, ABH also has a gold lipgloss called “Gilded”, which I own and is very beautiful. I also think that the ABH one might be a bit more wearable (based on the promotional photos that I have seen of this Too Faced one), and less “in your face” gold, but can be built up if you do want that. You can see a lip swatch of that shade and my review of the ABH lipglosses here.

Price and Quantity

This highlighter is priced at $42 CAD ($34 USD) and has 0.42 oz of product.

For price comparison I chose some other popular highlighters: the Becca Shimmering Skin Perfector Pressed Highlighter ($46 CAD/0.28 oz), the Stila Heaven’s Hue Highlighter ($42 CAD/0.35 oz), the Fenty Beauty Killawatt Freestyle Highlighter ($42 CAD/0.28 oz), the Make Up For Ever Pro Light Fusion Highlighter ($48 CAD/0.3 oz), and the Too Faced Love Light Prismatic Highlighter ($38 CAD/0.32 oz).

Rank Company’s Product Mentioned Above Cost ($ CAD) Quantity (oz) Cost-Quantity Ratio for 1 oz of product
1 Too Faced Diamond Light $42 0.42 $100/oz
2 Too Faced Love Light $38 0.32 $119/oz
3 Stila Heaven’s Hue $42 0.35 $120/oz
4 Fenty Killawatt Freestyle $42 0.28 $150/oz
5 MUFE Pro Light Fusion $48 0.3 $160/oz
6 Becca Shimmering Skin $46 0.28 $164/oz

Wow! or Waste? This highlighter is such a Wow! It is potentially one of the best value powder highlighters on the market right now! When I saw how much product was included, I kind of couldn’t believe it! I would say that you should definitely check this one out. I think I will be!

Pure Gold Loose Glitter

screen-shot-2017-12-08-at-10-52-41-am.pngscreen-shot-2017-12-08-at-10-52-18-am.pngScreen Shot 2017-12-08 at 10.52.23 AMscreen-shot-2017-12-08-at-10-52-29-am.png

Product Information

“Real gold is infused in this ultra-fine loose glitter for a buildable formula that can be used as a highlighter, eye shadow, on lips, or anywhere else you want to create a high-impact sparkling gold finish.

  • Infused with real gold for a luxe, sparkling finish
  • Use for dazzling sparkle on lips, eyes, face, and body
  • Ultra-fine loose glitter formula applies easily and is buildable for a custom golden moment”

Price and Quantity

This loose glitter is priced at $22 CAD ($17 USD) and has 0.07 oz of product.

Loose glitter isn’t something that is super saturated in the market. However, there are a few that we can compare to. Some that pop into my head are the MAC Glitter ($26 CAD/0.15 oz), the Make Up For Ever Glitters ($20 CAD/0.14 oz), and the Make Up For Ever Diamond Powder ($31 CAD/0.07 oz). Also, on the Make Up For Ever website, there are plenty more options for glitter than this. The two mentioned above are just the ones that are offered through Sephora. There are of course plenty of indie brands that offer loose glitter, but I am just giving some easily accessible options here for now.

Rank Company’s Product Mentioned Above Cost ($ CAD) Quantity (oz) Cost-Quantity Ratio for 1 oz of product
1 MUFE Glitters $20 0.14 $143/oz
2 MAC Glitter $26 0.15 $173/oz
3 TF Pure Gold Glitter $22 0.07 $314/oz
4 MUFE Diamond Powder $31 0.07 $443/oz

Wow! or Waste? Honestly, I think this product is a total Waste?! It is so expensive for only 0.07 oz of product! There are plenty more affordable glitters out there.

Also, just to point this out, Too Faced is also currently offering a glitter gift set for $32 CAD that includes FOUR glitters that all have 0.07 oz of product AND a deluxe sized glitter glue (and you can get this through Sephora)! So clearly, this gold one is very overpriced, likely because it claims to contain “real gold”. Does it really? Is that worth the price to you?? You will have to decide.

Glitter Pop! Eyeliner

screen-shot-2017-12-08-at-10-53-50-am.pngScreen Shot 2017-12-08 at 10.53.42 AMscreen-shot-2017-12-08-at-2-17-09-pm.png

Product Information

“Paint on…Peel off for the most glamorously dramatic and fabulous liner ever. Innovative film formers lock down glitter that stays put until you peel it off. Don’t leave the glitter on the dance floor, leave it on your eyes–where it belongs!

•Goof-proof application
•Easy to peel off with no glitter fall out
•Innovative film formers lock down glitter that won’t budge
•Mix and match colors or layer together for endless eye looks”

Price and Quantity

This glitter eyeliner is priced at $24 CAD ($20 USD) and has 0.23 oz of product.

Again, there aren’t a ton of glitter liners on the market, and certainly none that are formulated to peel off. The glitter liners that come to mind for comparison are the Urban Decay Heavy Metal Glitter Eyeliner ($20 CAD/0.25 oz) and the Fenty Beauty Eclipse 2-in-1 Glitter Release Eyeliner ($20 CAD/0.13 oz).

Rank Company’s Product Mentioned Above Cost
($ CAD)
Quantity (oz) # of Shades Available Cost-Quantity Ratio for 1 oz of product
1 UD Heavy Metal Glitter $20 0.25 13 $80/oz
2 Too Faced Glitter Pop! $24 0.23 8 $104/oz
3 Fenty Beauty Eclipse $20 0.13 3 $154/oz

Wow! or Waste? I think because this product is relatively unique, it is on the edge of being Wow!, despite the value. Yes, the Urban Decay glitter liners are certainly less expensive, and potentially just as good, if not better (with way more shades), if glitter is what you are looking for. So you will have to decide whether the “peel-off” feature is something that is important to you. The Fenty ones are definitely not as worth it since you get almost half the product, and there are only 3 shades. Although, you may want those liners for a different purpose since they are more like a classic liquid liner with a hint of glitter if you rub them.

Overall Collection Value

Overall, this collection is pretty middle of the range; a lot of the items are neither Wow! or Waste?, or are on the edge of being Wow! While I haven’t done full reviews of each product, and can therefore not speak to the performance of each product, this post can hopefully allow you to make informed purchasing decisions. While you may not always use all of a product (as we makeup addicts rarely do, due to the size of our collections), it’s the principle of the thing. Do you really want to spend a high price for a small amount of product, when other companies can provide products that have a better value and potentially perform just as well, if not better? On the other hand, you may absolutely run through certain types of products! In my experience, hitting pan on a bronzer is a very real possibility, so you should be aware of how much product you are actually getting.

Here is the overview of what we have learned through this Too Faced Chocolate Gold edition of Wow! or Waste?

7 thoughts on “Wow! or Waste? Too Faced Chocolate Gold Collection

  1. Honestly anything that says “real gold” as many time as this collection is a waste to me. They are putting so much emphasis on it that it makes the “real gold” seem sketchy (in my opinion). But the highlighter looks amazing and like such a good value!

    1. Totally! I am also skeptical of the “real gold”. I also just don’t get the attraction. I am really not interested in ingesting or absorbing metals through my skin if I don’t have to lol. Doesn’t seem quite right even though gold is supposed to be pretty innocuous.

      1. It apparently has antibacterial properties and does some lifting/tightening, but have you ever heard Guerlain say “real gold” about their L’Or Radiance Primer? Makes Too Faced seem cheap :/

    1. I also agree! These days I’m way more interested in all matte looks, so I’m not so sure I will be purchasing this one! It is great for holiday looks though ☺️
