Hey everyone! Happy Fall!!! I hope you are all doing well. I wanted to do a quick post today about how to save money while you are shopping. Sounds counterintuitive, but not if you already know about Ebates!
If you don’t already know (and I won’t be surprised if you do), Ebates is a company that literally pays you to shop. Ebates is an affiliate with many different stores, and if you shop in those stores through them, they earn money for referring you, and they give you some of that money back.
I remember, probably almost 10 years ago, seeing advertisements on TV for Ebates, and thinking “What a total scam.” Likely because it seemed too good to be true. When you hear about them, you are definitely left thinking “What’s the catch?” But once it is explained that they earn money from your transactions and in return give you some money back, it makes complete and total sense. If you are someone who does any online shopping at all, you NEED Ebates!!! Lord knows I do a TON of online shopping. What finally made me take the leap to join Ebates was when I saw a trusted Youtuber talking about what an amazing thing Ebates is. So I hope this post does that for you too if you haven’t yet joined. If you do join Ebates, please consider using my referral code (all links on this page).
How to join Ebates
Before joining, you need to know that Ebates is currently only available to residents of the United States, Canada, Singapore, South Korea and China. I am so sorry if you don’t fall into these categories! If you don’t hopefully there is a similar service available to your country, and you should definitely look into it. Of the list above, each country appears to have its own Ebates website.
One of the attractants of joining Ebates is that they offer you $10 just for signing up. However, you do need to make a $25 purchase within three months of joining to qualify.
Shopping with Ebates
Once you have signed up, go ahead and browse the stores that they are affiliated with. For the US Ebates, there are over 2,000 stores that you can shop with, while for Canada there are over 750 stores. I personally do not need 750, my main favourites are of course Sephora, Tarte, Urban Decay and Amazon. They actually offer quite a good list of cosmetic retailers on top of those favourites of mine, including Stila, Smashbox, Bobbi Brown, Sigma Beauty, MAC Cosmetics and more.
Once you have found a store through their website, click on their name and it will tell you how large of a percentage you get back from your purchase. Often Ebates will have deals on where you get 2X the regular cash back for specific stores. As you can see below, Sephora Canada currently has 2X cash back of 8%, where the regular percentage you get is 4%. By clicking the red “shop now” button, Ebates will direct you to that retailer’s website, and you will shop as normal.
It is important to note that if you do not go to the retailer through the Ebates portal, your purchase will not be tracked, and you will not earn cash back! Luckily, if you know you will be forgetting to use the Ebates portal, they actually have a browser extension (for Safari, Mozilla Firefox and Google Chrome) called Ebates Express that you can install in your browser so that it automatically alerts you when you are browsing an Ebates affiliated site. Once it alerts you, you can click a button that activates Ebates cash back. Before I downloaded this browser extension, I can’t even tell you how many times I forgot to use the Ebates portal and how many purchases I missed out on earning cash back. It can also help alert you to websites that are affiliated that you didn’t even know you could earn cash back on!
When you download the browser extension and visit a website that is supported by Ebates, this is what it looks like (below). Once you press “Activate ___% Cash Back”, it momentarily takes you to the regular redirect page and then back to the website that you were browsing so you can shop and make money!
Ebates also has an app for your phone, however you can’t use a shopping app for a website at the same time as the Ebates app. For example, you wouldn’t be able to use the Sephora app to make a purchase, while also using the Ebates app on your phone to get cash back. The Ebates app just redirects you to the regular Sephora website on your phone browser. Therefore, I usually make sure that I make Sephora purchases on my computer for guaranteed cash back.
Getting your cash back
Every three months Ebates will send you your “Big Fat Cheque,” either by mail or VIA Pay Pal if you sign up for that. Below is the schedule for which purchases are included in which cash back cheques sent to you.
To date, I have earned $63.43 since I joined last December. I think that is pretty good, considering without Ebates I wouldn’t have gotten any of that back!
On your account dashboard, you can see all of the purchases you have made and how much cash you earned back for those purchases. Below is a picture of all of my latest purchases that were paid out on my last cheque.
Well, honestly, I think that’s everything you need to know! I hope that you found this useful and that if you haven’t been using Ebates yet, that you will consider doing so now. It can only benefit you!
Again, all links in this post are my referral link, so consider using that if you want to support me the tiniest bit. It’s really not that important to me and I had no real incentive to write this post. Ebates is certainly not sponsoring this post. I just wanted to help you guys save money because I have really enjoyed using this service!
