Sephora VIB Rouge Holiday 2017 Preview Event

Hey everyone! Last weekend I went to two makeup events, the Sephora VIB Rouge Holiday Preview and the Urban Decay Birthday Bash, so I wanted to share my experiences with you! Today I will talk about the Sephora VIB Rouge Holiday Preview, and I will post about the Urban Decay Birthday Bash tomorrow.

If you don’t already know, VIB Rouge is the highest tier in the membership hierarchy at Sephora. To achieve VIB Rouge status, you have to spend $1000 CAD in one calendar year at Sephora. I only just became VIB Rouge at the beginning of this year I believe, and I have to admit to you that my VIB Rouge status is renewed until December 2018. That’s right, I’ve already spent enough for it to be renewed for the next year too. Oopsies? My makeup collection has literally exploded in the last year, so the fact that I’ve spent this much money makes total sense.

A couple times a year Sephora hosts exclusive events for VIB Rouge members only. These events are usually an opportunity to preview and purchase items before they go on sale to the general public. Additionally, they sometimes have contests going on, free bites and drinks, and complimentary mini makeovers and mini facials available to you. Before this Holiday Preview event, I had already been to two of these preview events.

Here’s an instagram post that I posted to participate in a contest that was happening during a Sephora event that happened this February. Not my best picture, but whatever!

If you are a VIB Rouge, when an event is coming up, Sephora will e-mail you to let you know that one is approaching and that you need to RSVP if you would like to attend. RSVPs are not open right away when they send this e-mail, they tell you a time and date when they do open. However, it is usually very quick after you receive the e-mail, sometimes the day before or on the same day as the RSVPs open, so make sure that you are on top of your e-mails from Sephora! As soon as the RSVPs open, it is imperative that you RSVP immediately. They only have so much room at these events so you need to make sure that you reserve your spot. Additionally, you can bring one friend to this event, regardless of their Sephora rank.

In the e-mail there is often a tease of the products that will be available to you for preview, however there will be more products in store than what you see in this e-mail. There is also always a swag bag that you can get if you spend over $50. These bags are usually quite good, filled with samples of skin care products and makeup products. The samples are usually deluxe sized, however the samples that you see in the picture below are not all of the ones that will come in the bag. It’s usually a surprise what you get.

Holiday Preview Items

At the event there were certainly a few more items there than what was displayed on in the invite e-mail. However, some of the items displayed in the e-mail, were not at the event! How annoying! Unfortunately I didn’t take any pictures at the event (for fear of getting in trouble). I don’t have a list of everything that was there, but I am going to include some pictures below of the items that I was able to find online that were at the event.

Smashbox Drawn In. Decked Out. Set (Limited Edition)

$48 CAD or $39 USD ($77 USD value). Available NOW on the Sephora website.

This set contains:
– 0.17 oz/ 5.1 g Travel-Size Spotlight Palette in Pearl
– 0.21 oz/ 6.2 g Full-Size* Cover Shot Eyeshadow Palette in Ablaze
– 0.21 oz/ 6.2 g Full-Size* Limited Edition Cover Shot Eyeshadow Palette in Sultry
– Ana Strumpf-designed Sticker Sheet

My recommendation:
*It is claimed in the product description that these cover shot palettes are full size. Guess what, they aren’t. I’m not sure if they are trying to pull one over on us or not, but the actual full size Cover Shot palettes that are sold separately have 0.27 oz, whereas these Cover Shot palettes included in the set only have 0.21 oz.
Despite all of this, this set still seems like a great deal to me. The total value that I calculated in CAD, since it wasn’t given on the Sephora website is ~$77. These cover shot palettes were super popular when they first came out, and the quality of the shadows is pretty good. I own two of these Cover Shot Palettes (Golden Hour and Softlight), and I also own both Spotlight Palettes (Pearl and Gold). I didn’t buy this set at the event but I am seriously considering buying it right now. Should I buy it? Comment down below!

NARS X Man Ray: The Kiss Velvet Matte Lip Pencil Set (Limited Edition)

$62 CAD ($132 CAD value) or $49 USD ($98 USD value). Coming Soon on the Sephora Website.

This set contains:
– 4 x Full-size Velvet Matte Lip Pencil in Endangered Red, Toundra, Wild Ways, and Spell Bound.
– Man Ray-inspired gold pouch

My recommendation:
This kit has amazing value and the description is accurate, in that they are actually full-sized products. Four full-sized products plus a cute makeup pouch for half the price! If you like the formula of these lip pencils, you should absolutely go for it. However, I do not find them very hydrating so they are not my personal favourite. Pretty colours though!

Urban Decay Little Vices Lipstick Kit (Limited Edition)

$45 CAD or $25 USD. Available NOW on the Sephora website.

This set contains:
– 5 x 0.03 oz/ 1 g Vice Lipsticks in Violate (dusty purple w/pink undertone), 1993 (medium brown), Double Crossed (matte berry w/tonal shimmer), Love Drunk (deep red w/tonal shimmer), Mad (bright purple shimmer)

My recommendation:
In terms of the amount of product you get, this set is only worth ~$29 CAD. So you will have to decide whether you value having a selection of colours or whether the quantity of product you get overall is more important. If it’s the quantity of product, this set is a total rip off.
One additional thing to note is what the heck is up with the difference in price between CAD and USD. The CAD is almost DOUBLE the price!!! Sorry, but that is not at all reasonable with the current exchange rate. A total rip-off for Canadians.
If you’ve read any of my other posts, you may know that this lipstick formula is my holy grail. I was super stoked when I saw that this kit was going to be at the preview, however I ended up not purchasing it. I already own 2 out of the 5 shades. However, if you own none of the shades, and you have yet to try this lipstick formula, you should definitely consider biting the bullet (especially if you are in the US and paying the US price)! You can read my review of these lipsticks here. Included in that review are also swatches of the two shades that I already own: 1993 and Violate.

Clinique Chubby Treats (Limited Edition)

$33 CAD ($~40 CAD value) or $25 USD ($34 USD value). Coming Soon on the Sephora website.

This set contains:
– 6 x 0.03 oz/ 1 g Chubby Stick Intense Moisturizing Lip Colour Balm in Curviest Caramel, Broadest Berry, Pink Honey, Bountiful Blush, Super Strawberry, and Black Honey

My recommendation:
I do quite like these Chubby Sticks, however I do think that they are seriously over priced for a tinted lip balm. They are also not the most hydrating lip balm ever and aren’t all that pigmented. Also, in this specific set, I can promise you that the product there that you see at the tip of each stick is all you get. There is not more product hiding below that tip, ready to be rolled up. So because you get such a small amount of product, this set might not be worth it to you. But if you’ve been wanting to try these lip balms, then this is a good opportunity to try a bunch of colours for only just over the price of one full-sized Chubby Stick. I own the shade Curviest Caramel, and I do quite like it.

Fresh Sugar Lip Beauty Box (Limited Edition)

$54 CAD ($87 CAD value) or $45 USD ($72 USD value). Coming Soon on the Sephora website.

This set contains:
6 x 0.07 oz/ 2.2 g Sugar Lip Treatment Sunscreen SPF 15 in Original, Tulip, Rosé, Poppy, Honey, Berry

My recommendation:
When I calculated out the value of this set, it is actually only worth ~$81 CAD, so they are a little off on their value claim. Regardless, I really love these tinted lip balms. They are definitely the best I have ever tried, and that is backed up by the fact that I own 6 of these. I definitely would have bought this set, however I already own two of these shades so because of that I wasn’t tempted enough. You can read my review of these lip balms here. If you haven’t tried these yet, I truly think this set is a great chance to.

Bite Beauty Champagne Discovery Lip Set (Limited Edition)

$39 CAD ($73 CAD value) or $35 USD ($65 USD value). Available NOW on the Sephora website.

This set contains:
– 0.17 oz/ 4.75 g The Multistick in Cashew
– 0.05 oz/ 1.4 g The Lip Pencil in Cashew
– 0.14 oz/ 4g Lip Gloss in Champagne

My recommendation:
This set has an amazing value, and their value estimate of $73 is accurate. Each item is truly full size, and you are paying just over half the price to try out each one. I think this set has got to be the star of the show, because of the variety of items and how each one is actually full size. I didn’t purchase this set because I am not so interested in the Multisticks, they are a bit too drying for my dry lips. However, I am super curious about the lip gloss, and I can always use more lip pencils, so I might still buy this set in the future.Screen Shot 2017-09-15 at 10.34.03 AM

Drunk Elephant Come C About Me (Limited Edition)

$106 CAD ($128 CAD value) or $88 USD ($108 USD Value). Coming Soon on the Sephora website.

This set contains:
– 1 oz/ 30 mL Beste Jelly Cleanser
– 0.5 oz/15 mL B-Hydra Intensive Hydration Gel
– 1 oz/ 30 mL C-Firma Day Serum

My recommendation:
This set is such a good deal if you are interested in trying out some Drunk Elephant products. The C-Firma Day Serum that you get is the full size, which itself is worth $100 CAD. So If you were going to get that anyways, you might as well get this set so that you can try out the other two items while you are at it.

Tata Harper Glow For It Kit (Limited Edition)

$83 CAD (~$117 CAD value) or $60 USD ($94 USD value). Coming Soon on the Sephora website.

This set contains:
– 1 oz/ 30 mL Resurfacing Mask
– 0.5 oz/ 15 mL Regenerating Cleanser
– 0.33 oz/ 10 mL Repairative Moisturizer

My recommendation:
I have never actually heard of this brand, however it appears that it is an expensive one. This set includes a full size of the Resurfacing Mask, which is worth $77 CAD on its own. So again, if you wanted to get that mask, you might as well get this set for a couple more dollars so that you can explore these other items.

Kate Somerville All Glow, No Glitter Trio (Limited Edition)

$90 CAD ($155 CAD value) or $75 USD ($127 USD value). Coming Soon on the Sephora website.

This set contains:
– 4 oz/ 120 mL ExfoliKate Cleanser Daily Foaming Wash
– 0.5 oz/ 15 mL ExfoliKate Intensive Exfoliating Treatment
– 1.7 oz/ 50 mL ExfoliKate Glow Moisturizer

My recommendation:
All of these products are full size, and yet you are saving over $60!!! Wow the value of this set is amazing! I haven’t tried any of these products, but if you are a skin care junkie, do it!!Screen Shot 2017-09-15 at 10.34.32 AM

Beautyblender Blenders For All Seasons (Limited Edition)

$100 CAD ($140 CAD value) or $65 USD ($80 USD value). Available NOW on the Sephora website.

This set contains:
– Original beautyblender®
– beautyblender® Bubble
– beautyblender® Royal
– beautyblender® Lavender
– blender Cleanser sample
– Nest

My recommendation:
I can’t quite accurately calculate how much this set is actually worth. They don’t tell us how much the sample of the blender Cleanser is, and I have no idea how much the “nest” is worth. If you are wondering what the heck this nest is, it is literally a drying stand for a blender.. Not really a necessary product. However, the value of 4 beautyblenders is $112 CAD, so you are saving a tiny bit of money if you know you are going to buy 4 more beautyblenders over time. The nest and blender Cleanser are just small bonuses.

Other than all of the items above, there were a few more at the event that I can’t actually find anywhere on the internet. All I remember was that there were 3 Philosophy items, one was a gift set that included a holiday body wash with a lip gloss, another was a gift set that was a body wash and a hand cream (maybe?) and the last was just another holiday body wash sold by itself. I almost picked up the set with the lipgloss because it was only $16 CAD, but then I thought I might as well spend that $16 on makeup so I decided against it.

What I Purchased

Because I didn’t actually purchase any of the holiday preview items (seems silly to go to this event but then buy none of the preview items, but I’ll probably buy some of the holiday items later on), I needed to spend $50 on something in the store so that I could get the swag bag. This is not hard, clearly. I have an ever growing list of things that I want, however I hadn’t yet been able to swatch and see the Fenty Beauty items that had just released. When I started swatching the different products in the store, I knew what I was going to get. And guess what? I definitely spent well over $50 lol.

I bought the Killawatt Freestyle Highlighter in “Girl Next Door/Chic Phreak”, the Gloss Bomb Universal Lip Luminizer, and the Match Stix Shimmer Skinstick in “Yacht Lyfe”.

IMG_5488.jpg
Upon first glance, the packaging of these highlighters looks just like a plain white octagon, however in direct light it is actually white with iridescent purple shimmer. It’s so beautiful!

Killawatt Freestyle Highlighter in “Girl Next Door/Chic Phreak”. Described as a soft pink sheen/supercharged peachy pink shimmer.

This lighting shows a bit more saturated version of the colour of this highlighter.

Let me know if you would like me to review these items! I probably will regardless though.

Swag Bag with $50 purchase

Ok and finally, here are the items that I received in the swag bag from the event.

2017-09-09 09.04.50.jpg

IMG_5468.jpg
This bag is great. It feels really solid and good quality. All of the bags that I have received from the VIB Rouge events have been really good and sturdy.

The items I received are:

  1. The Fenty Pro Filt’r Instant Retouch Primer (0.021 oz).
    What it is:
A shine-stopping, pore-diffusing primer that smooths the way for better foundation application and longer wear with an instant retouch effect.

Total Value of the Swag Bag = $54.41 + bag

Well that’s it everyone! I honestly didn’t even think I had enough material to do this post, and yet it has got to be one of my longest posts yet. Sigh..

Regardless, I hope you enjoyed reading about my experience! Make sure that you check back in tomorrow for my post about the Urban Decay Birthday Bash. It will probably be shorter than this one.

    1. Yes that’s totally true about the multistick! I think that may be common for products that are marketed as multipurpose. Maybe using the lip liner would help though! Thanks for reading ☺️

  1. I ordered that Smashbox set! I have almost bought that Ablaze palette a few times so when I saw the trio, I figured this was a good time to finally cave and get it!

Love the goodie bag you got! Some nice stuff in there!
