Chick Advisor and eos: Organic Smooth Spheres Lip Balm Product Review Club

Hey everyone! Today I wanted to share with you some products that I received from Chick Advisor. Chick Advisor is another website that acts as an online community for sharing product reviews for items in categories like beauty, wellness, food & drink, shopping, mom & baby, and house & home. You can also choose to join the Product Review Club on their website, where if you review enough products and have a high enough social media following, they may send you complimentary products for testing purposes. However, Chick Advisor is different in that it focuses on reviews from Canadian women, which is refreshing and really quite exciting. Canada is always coming second to the US, so it’s nice to be at least treated as equals for once.

From what I can tell, Chick Advisor has two methods of you receiving products. One is similar to Influenster, where they send you pre-surveys to determine if you qualify to test specific products that they are looking to send out. They claim that they do this on their website, however I have not yet received any e-mails of this nature from them over my two months of membership. The other is by applying for the “Latest Offer”, which is a specific campaign that you can sign up for by filling out a form. Chick Advisor will then e-mail you if you are accepted for this campaign. This is how I received my products.

So, what I will be reviewing here for you today are two products from eos. Ever wonder what eos actually stands for? eos is an acronym for Evolution of Smooth, which totally makes sense with the products that they offer. I received two of their new Organic Smooth Spheres Lip Balms in the flavours Strawberry Sorbet and Sweet Mint.

eos Product Review Club

Something that I need to start out with is that I am a bit annoyed with the extremely quick deadline that we were given to review these products by. When I was e-mailed saying that I had been accepted into this campaign, I was totally thrilled. It stated that my items would arrive in around 2-3 weeks. However, further in the e-mail, it read that I needed to review these products by September 11th at the latest. I received this e-mail on August 25th. This means that their estimate of package arrival could have easily been after the deadline for review (September 11th was 2 weeks and 3 days after I received that e-mail). So I basically was not even expecting the items to arrive before the deadline. Luckily they did, they arrived this last Thursday September 7, however I had to review them by this last Monday. I would have really liked to try out these products longer, but I did what I could before I posted my reviews on Chick Advisor. In the future, I hope they gave more leeway in time. They will get better quality reviews if they give their reviewers more time.

When the package arrived, it came in a small shrink-wrapped box that had eos and Chick Advisor labelling on it. Inside the box, there was pink tissue paper, the two lip products and an information card. I was pleasantly surprised with the packaging. It was quite cute, and nicer than the Influenster package I received last month. These products were actually protected in the box, whereas my Influenster Voxbox items weren’t even wrapped inside the box at all, just floating around, no doubt crashing all over the place during shipping. Kudos Chick Advisor!

Packaging and First Impressions

The packaging of these lip balms is very adorable. They have the same basic packaging, which only differs in colour. The Strawberry Sorbet flavour has a pretty medium pink colour, whereas the Sweet Mint has a soft light green colour. Both have a slight sparkle to them, and are packaged in the classic spherical casing of eos lip balms. The packaging has a smooth matte texture, and there is a small depression on the side of the sphere to make it easier to open, which I appreciate. Once you unscrew the product, you immediately smell the most delicious scent. For the Strawberry Sorbet flavour, there is a really luscious strawberry scent. The strawberry scent doesn’t smell exactly like fresh strawberries, but it is still undeniably strawberry-ish, and is very sweet. Kind of similar to the strawberry scent found in Body Shop products. The Sweet Mint flavour of course has a mint scent. The mint scent doesn’t smell exactly like mint, but a sweeter version of the real herb. I really enjoy both flavours. I wouldn’t say that I really prefer one over the other, they are both really nice. This lip balm also comes in other flavours as well (Blueberry Acai, Passionfruit, Pomegranate Raspberry, Summer Fruit and Honeysuckle Honeydew). The balm itself is shaped in a sphere, and is white/cream in appearance.

Price and Quantity

These lip balms are priced at $3.99 CAD on the eos website, however price does vary across retailers if you don’t purchase directly from their website. These lip balms have 0.25 oz of product, which is a good amount. To compare the cost to other lip balms, the typical most inexpensive lip balms that people buy are often vaseline products, Chapstick, Carmex and many many more which are all around a couple of dollars. One tiny step above that in terms of price I think would be Burt’s Bees lip balms, which are typically ~$5 CAD. Then there are the higher end lip balms like the Jack Black Moisture Therapy Lip Balm (my HG), which is $10.50 CAD, and the Fresh Sugar Tinted Lip Treatments, which are priced at $29 CAD.

Here is the cost comparison, organized from best deal to worst deal:

Rank Company’s Product Mentioned Above Cost ($ CAD) Quantity (oz) Cost-Quantity Ratio for 1 oz of product
1 Vaseline Lip Therapy $2 0.25 $8/oz
2 eos Organic Smooth $4 0.25 $16/oz
3 Burt’s Bees $5 0.15 $33/oz
4 Jack Black Moisture $11 0.25 $42/oz
5 Fresh Sugar $29 0.15 $193/oz

This lip balm has great value, and you will see that the ingredients used make it worth the slightly higher price over vaseline products.

Here are the claims from the eos website. The claims are the same for both flavours:

Strawberry Sorbet

Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower) Seed Oil*, Beeswax/Cera Alba (Cire d’abeille)*, Cocos Nucifera (Coconut) Oil*, Copernicia Cerifera (Carnauba) Wax/Cire de carnauba*, Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Oil*, Flavor (Aroma), Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea) Butter*, Olea Europaea (Olive) Fruit Oil*, Fragaria Vesca (Strawberry) Fruit Extract*, Tocopherol, Stevia Rebaudiana Leaf/Stem Extract*. *Organic

Sweet Mint

Olea Europaea (Olive) Fruit Oil*, Beeswax (Cire D’abeille)*, Cocos Nucifera (Coconut) Oil*, Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Oil*, Mentha Piperita (Peppermint) Oil*, Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea Butter)*, Stevia Rebaudiana Leaf/Stem Extract*, Tocopherol, Limonene**, Linalool**. *Organic. **Component of Mentha Piperita (Peppermint) Oil*. Certified Organic by Oregon Tilth.

I think the best part of these ingredients lists is that there are no petrochemicals, which are some of the most common ingredients in lip balms and cosmetic products in general. Petrochemicals are crude oil by-products that are separated out in the refining process and are used in cosmetics. Yes, I am talking about oil that they take out of the ground to make gas and other products (fossil fuels). There are concerns that these products can have adverse effects on your health, and may be carcinogenic. The fact that cosmetic companies use derivatives of fossil fuels in cosmetics is extremely disturbing, but it is also extremely difficult to avoid these ingredients because they are everywhere in the cosmetics industry! Therefore, that should make us appreciate all the more that these eos Organic Smooth Spheres do not have crude oil derivatives.

Something that I also really appreciate is that eos has made the effort to make sure that this lip balm, and all others in this line are made with 100% natural ingredients and are certified organic. This is extremely important, given that you wear lip balm around your mouth, and you inevitably eat a bit of it during drinking and eating. The products that you wear on your lips should be as safe as possible!

The balm itself is shaped in a sphere, and is white/cream in appearance. However, when you apply the product it goes on translucent or clear. This lip balm adds a slight shine to your lips, but it is not too much. If you happen to lick your lips while you are wearing this lip balm, you will notice that it tastes just as good as it smells! MMmm strawberries, or mmmm mint!

You will notice upon the application of the Sweet Mint lip balm specifically, that there will be a slight tingling on your lips. This is from the mint flavour, and I quite like it. The tingling is not too intense.

The only thing that slightly bothers me about the shape of the lip balm is that it is a bit awkward to apply. Because it is in a large sphere shape, it is hard to apply to the inner corners of your lips accurately, and you have to open your mouth quite wide. This may look a little strange to any onlookers. However, if it’s a great lip balm, who cares?

When you apply the product, it applies very smoothly and in a uniform layer. There is no tugging on application. The consistency is a bit stiffer, likely because it has wax in it, but this is a good thing. When you coat your lips with it, a thin but durable layer of lip balm applies. Because this lip balm is less slippy, it will last longer on your lips and you won’t have to reapply as much after drinking and eating.

This lip balm does a pretty good job of providing lasting hydration. I have chronically dry lips, so finding a hydrating lip balm is very important to me. This lip balm definitely suits all of my needs, although I think that there is room for improvement with how hydrating it is. My lips never feel like they are dried out when I wear this lip balm, however by the end of the day I do feel like they could be a bit more hydrated. This may only be because I do have such naturally dry lips.

Final Thoughts
Overall, I am very satisfied with this lip balm and I will probably be repurchasing in the future. They have great value and great ingredients. I am definitely eager to also explore the other flavours offered in this line, since these ones are so delicious smelling and tasting!

Have you tried eos products, or any of the lip balms in this line? I’d love to hear what the other flavours are like!

  1. Great review! I found the same thing that they didn’t overly hydrate my lips. I really liked the coconut one. I stopped buying them though after the blueberry one gave my lips a rash. I wonder if the new formula would be better.

    1. Omg coconut!!!? I LOVE coconut 😍 wow I’m surprised one gave you a rash! Especially since the ingredients aren’t especially chemically, at least not in this specific line. All the ingredients look like they are Latin names of plants etc, no chemicals, so these may work for you!

      1. Yes the coconut one is amazing. You’ll love it! I actually took the time to do a side by side comparison of the coconut and blueberry one to see the difference in ingredients and had it narrowed down to a handful of ingredients that could be the cause. I have terrible luck with lip balms, in general, giving me rashes. I think I just have sensitive lips!
