31 Days of Reviews, Day 22: L’Oreal Voluminous Lash Paradise Mascara

quick take.jpg

Hello everyone, it’s day 22 of my review challenge! Today’s review is on a mascara, so how can I not talk about L’Oreal’s Voluminous Lash Paradise. I know that everyone has been buzzing about this mascara for months, so who hasn’t tried it? But just in case, here is my review if you haven’t bought one yourself.

Packaging and First Impressions

When this mascara first came out in May, the first thing that everyone was talking about is how the packaging looks exactly like Too Faced’s Better Than Sex Mascara. Drugstore companies are notorious for not only trying to make a dupe of a more expensive product, but also duping the packaging as well. That being said, the packaging is very cute and girly. The tube is a matte metallic light pink with black and gold detailing. The only con that I can say about the packaging is that it seems to get scratched/damaged easily. I haven’t taken this mascara anywhere with me, it just sits in my bathroom, and yet mine has scratches on it. Additionally, the gold detailing seems to wear off quite quickly.

The wand itself is medium-sized with thicker inner and outer edges, resulting in a curvy hourglass shape. When compared to Too Faced Better The Sex Mascara, the L’Oreal wand is a little less curvy. The bristles are densely packed and fluffy.

The formula of this mascara is on the drier side. The pigment is very black (at least for the shade “blackest black”, and has no obnoxious smell. Some mascaras smell so bad! I only own the shade blackest black, but it also comes in the shades black, and black brown. This mascara also comes in a waterproof version, but only in the shade blackest black I believe.

Price

The price of this mascara is about the same as other drugstore mascaras. However, I have seen many mascaras in the drugstore starting to reaching prices around $15 CAD. This mascara is usually priced at around $10 CAD – $13 CAD, so it may be a tiny bit cheaper than some others. Of course, this mascara is a LOT cheaper than the Too Faced Better Than Sex, which retails at $30 CAD or $23 USD.

For mascara, I won’t talk about the quantity, since usually you don’t run out of mascara. Usually, you just use for the 6 month recommended time frame and then throw it out. I at least, have never really “run out” of a mascara. Maybe you have!

Claims

Here are the claims from the L’Oreal Paris website:

“Take your lashes to paradise! Our 1st mascara for voluptuous volume & length. Soft wavy bristle brush holds maximum formula for a dramatic volumizing charge. 200+ bristles catch every lash for a full fringe effect. Smooth glide formula provides silky volume in one coat. Lashes are feathery soft to the touch. Women agreed: 91% saw intense & volumized lashes and 87% saw more beautiful lashes. +98% lengthening effect.

Pigmentation and Performance

So my overall opinion is that I really like this mascara. Most of the reasons I like it are because it has a drier formula.

  1. When a mascara formula is drier, it is less likely to stick all of your lashes together with application. I hate using a wet mascara, which immediately clumps all of your lashes into like 3 large lashes. It doesn’t look good! This mascara separates your lashes beautifully!
  2. The formula dries quickly, so you aren’t having to worry about getting smudges all over your eye lids for an extended period of time.
  3. It builds up quickly. Mascaras that are wet layer best when you wait for each layer to dry. This ends up taking forever and makes doing your mascara in the morning so high maintenance. I basically don’t end up using my wet mascaras because of this, because I know that it will be such a time waster. This dry mascara looks great with one coat, but it is so quick and easy to build it up to two or three coats, if you want that.

I also like this mascara because it is very black and pigmented, and I do think it adds a bit of length to my lashes. It also adds volume, but not so much that it becomes chunky.

Honestly, in comparison to the Too Faced Better Than Sex Mascara, I like Lash Paradise Better. My personal experience with the Better Than Sex has been that it was quite flaky, and the tip of the brush always touched my inner eyelid during application. For some reason I could never avoid that. For those reasons, I prefer Lash Paradise, because those things don’t happen.

Final Thoughts

I love this mascara and I use it daily. The only question mark with this mascara is that I feel like it is not performing quite as well for me at the moment. I have owned this mascara for almost 3 months now, and I am wondering if it is starting to dry out. This is definitely a possibility, since you would think that drier formulas would dry out quicker. Regardless, I am still using this mascara every day and I really like it. However, I may go purchase another one in the next few days because it may just be time for a new one. So that is another thing to consider, this mascara might not last you the full 6 months that mascaras typically do. But this doesn’t bother me at all.

Have you used this mascara? If you haven’t, now is the time!

    1. Wow that’s so crazy that there is such a delay! Must be frustrating with all the hype that has been going on after all these months. I’ve been thinking about doing my PhD in Europe in the future, but I’m not so sure cause I know a lot of makeup brands are less available there! I need my makeup!! Lol

We don’t have the full range of maybelline. #thestruggleisreal We have great things but make up it’s not one of them!

  1. I am having the same issue with this mascara as you! Mine has dried out really quickly. I used it for about a month straight and on my second month, it was way too dry. Otherwise, I really liked it and I’d buy it again because it’s cheap enough.

    1. Well it’s nice to hear I’m not the only one. I guess there are pros and cons to everything. I’m going to go buy a new one today, but the one I have currently still works. It just takes a bit longer to build it up. And I’ve noticed it’s not holding my curl as much.
