Hello everyone and welcome to day 16 of my review challenge. Today’s review is supposed to be of an eyeliner, so I decided to review a more affordable pencil eyeliner that I like to use on my waterline.
I’ve been using black eyeliner on my waterline for maybe 12 years now… 😱😱😱 It’s kind of scary when you think about it, but I was in grade 6 or 7. I always used black liner on my waterline because that used to be what everyone thought made your eyes look bigger. I have smaller more almond-y eyes, so bigger is maybe something I would go for. Back then, I was maybe going for that, although the resultant look is what I like, whether they look bigger or not.
Everyone always goes on and on now about how you don’t want to use black eyeliner on your waterline, and how it actually makes your eyes look smaller. Guess what, I don’t care. Black eyeliner on my waterline makes my eyes look defined, intense, and it makes me look more awake. If I ever dare to show up to school without black liner on my waterline, I get comments from people saying “You look really tired”. Thanks!! Not!! I know you can smudge it just below your waterline on your lash line to actually make your eyes look bigger, but I just don’t like doing that. I like the clean, crisp look.
Packaging and First Impressions
These eyeliner pencils are just that, they are pencils. They are not mechanical, so you do need to sharpen them. FYI, they do not come with the sharpener on the bottom of the pencil. I really couldn’t care less that they aren’t mechanical, so long as they are affordable and they work well. The different shades of pencils are also coloured externally to match that shade. I own three shades of these pencils, Black 001, Brown 003, and Nude 005. It’s not clear how many shades they have in the collection because they aren’t listed on the Rimmel site, and not all retailers have all of the shades. From what I can tell there are, in addition to the colours that I own, a taupe, a turquoise, a dark blue, a purple, a sparkling black and a silver. I would definitely like to add some of those fun colours to my collection. I hope one day they maybe expand that colour range as well to add some more extreme colours. I am always looking for some inexpensive bright coloured pencil eyeliners for cool makeup looks. Do you know of any drugstore brands that have good ones?
Price and Quantity
At Walmart these eyeliner pencils are around $5 CAD each for 1.2 grams (0.042 oz). I know I bought these at Shopper’s though and I think they were at least $7 CAD each.. Big mistake. Don’t buy things at Shopper’s. I just love looking around in there and Walmart is such a hassle to go to 😫. ALSO, Walmart is always out of everything that I want! I digress… Anyways, this is a very comparable price for eyeliner pencils. You may be able to get a bit cheaper with either NYX pencils or Essence pencils. I haven’t tried either of those out.
Here are the claims from the Rimmel London website:
“·Intense color, easy application
·Soft and blendable formula for an easy smokey look
·Smudge-proof long wear formula up to 12 hours wear
·Dermatologist & ophthalmologist tested”
The website really doesn’t say a lot so here are the claims from Walmart as well:
“Long lasting shocking color intensity with kohl. Britania High intensity color for an instant color impact. Ultra smooth & creamy formula that glides on easily. Waterproof, smudge-proof, sweat-proof, heat-proof, humidity-proof and scandal- proof. Dermatologist & ophthalmologist tested. Safe for sensitive eyes.”
What do you think scandal-proof means? Lol. Rimmel London is not a cruelty free brand.
Pigmentation and Performance
I am pretty happy with these eyeliners. They have great pigmentation and they are very creamy, so they don’t require a lot of pressure to apply. The colours are true to what they claim to be. The black is very black, and the nude is the perfect nude to make you look more awake. I like the nude for more romantic eye looks. The brown I have actually has a tiny bit of gold sparkle in it. I’m not sure if it translates onto the eye, but it is noticeable when you swatch it. I haven’t really used this one as much because I am so stuck on black liner. These liners also apply without skipping. All good things.
These pencil eyeliners last a reasonably good amount of time on the waterline. I basically never retouch throughout the day. They don’t fade enough that they really need it. They will fade a bit on the outer edges of your waterline, but I kind of like the way they fade a tiny bit through the day. It softens my look just a little bit which I really don’t mind. However, if I am going out that night and I want to refresh my look I will re-line my eyes.
I haven’t used these to line my top lid, nor have I smudged them on the lower lash line. However, I have heard from others that they work great for this since they are so creamy. Here are some looks with the eyeliners! If you ever see an eye look that I create, it’s safe to assume I have used the Rimmel London Scandaleyes Kohl Kajal on my waterline.
So many eyeliners claim to be waterproof and to last forever on the waterline, and I haven’t found one that truly does. This includes the Marc Jacobs Highliner Gel Eye Crayon Eyeliners, which are so over-popularized. This is why I buy drugstore eyeliners, the expensive ones just aren’t worth it. They don’t work amazingly better, therefore the exponentially high price is just not worth it. Additionally, pencil eyeliner is the easiest makeup product to carry around with you and touch up on the go. If I have to touch up once a day, so be it! I couldn’t care less. This is why I recommend these Rimmel London Scandaleyes liners. They work well and they are so affordable. You really can’t go wrong, I just wish there were a few more fun colours.
Have you used these eyeliners? Do you have any other brands that you can suggest to me? I would really like to expand my colour range 😉
