Hey everyone and welcome to the second part of Day 8 of my 31 Days of Reviews. If you read my post yesterday, you will know that I wanted to review both the Jack Black Moisture Therapy and the Fresh Sugar Lip Treatments, however I only had time to do the one. So today I am following up with the other. I thought that it was important that I do lip swatches of these tinted lip treatments so that you can see how strong the tint actually is, and whether these are actually worth the comparatively expensive price tag.
Packaging and First Impressions
These tinted lip treatments come in a matte lipstick tube that matches the colour of the lip tint. They come in 13 different shades, including a clear shade. They seem to play around with the shades from time to time, as I own a two that are no longer included in the colour range below (maybe Sephora stopped carrying those particular colours, but they are available elsewhere), and they have recently produced more shades. The shape of the product itself is just a regular cylinder, so this can make accurate application a little difficult, which matters for the more pigmented shades. I love the look of the colourful matte tubes, however, these are the type of products that I will carry around in my purse a lot, and this has caused some of the labelling to rub off. This will be obvious in my lip swatch photos below. These lip tints have the slightest floral smell, but it’s not really that obvious.
Price and Quantity
The price of these lip tints is $29 CAD ($24 USD) for 4.3 grams (0.15 oz) of product. Yesterday I included these in my cost comparison, so here is an excerpt:
To compare the cost, the typical most inexpensive lip balms that people buy are often vaseline products, Chapstick, Carmex and many many more which are all around a couple of dollars. One tiny step above that in terms of price I think would be Burt’s Bees and EOS lip balms, which typically ~$5 CAD. Then there are the Fresh Sugar Tinted Lip Treatments, which are definitely priced as high-end products. Here is the cost comparison, organized from best deal to worst deal:
|Company’s Product Mentioned Above||Cost ($ CAD)||Quantity (oz)||Cost-Quantity Ratio for 1 oz of product|
|Vaseline Lip Therapy||$2||0.25||$10/oz|
Clearly these lip treatments are extremely expensive when compared to regular lip balms. However, it is very difficult to find a good lip balm that has a pigmented tint.
Here are the claims from the Fresh website, with some also off of Sephora. I chose the nude colour but the claims are go for all colours:
“Sugar Nude Tinted Lip Treatment Sunscreen SPF 15 moisturizes, protects, and smoothes the lips while leaving a shimmery blush nude tint, offering sheer coverage or buildable color. It is the perfect partner to our popular Sugar Lip Treatment Sunscreen SPF 15.

This lip-loving essential has a bright, citrus scent and is free of petroleum, mineral oil, and lanolin.

Pigmentation and Performance
When I first started buying these lip tints, I was at the very beginning of fixing my lip dryness issues. I had just started using the Jack Black Moisture Therapy Lip Balm, and my lips were starting to improve, however I was afraid of using anything else. Although I was happy with my progress, I still really wanted to be able to wear different colours on my lips, and at that point lipstick etc. was out of the question in my mind. Therefore, I decided to try these lip tints, because they were suggested to me as also being very nourishing lip balms.
When I first started using them, they did not feel quite as moisturizing as the JB Moisture Therapy, and my lips wouldn’t be as hydrated at the end of the day as they could be. However, when I use them now, I never have any lip hydration issues and they never feel like they are going dry or are going to peel. Therefore, I think when I first started using them, my lips were still in the healing process and were sensitive.
I love these lip balms. They are SO smooth in texture. They are so soft and buttery and just a total pleasure to wear. I probably reapply every 2-3 hours, like every other lip balm I own. The lighter colours have actually surprised me by how much tint they have. The only exception is Rose, which doesn’t give a lot of tint. Some of the darker colours are especially impressive as you will see below. I have a scar on the left side of my lower lip (your left while looking at these pics), that looks like a white line, and you can only barely see it through most of these. Here are the lip swatches:
I genuinely like these lip balms. I bought all of these when I was in the middle of my lip product crisis. I didn’t think that I could wear any lipsticks or any such products, so these were my only opportunity for lip colour. That is probably why I bought so many at that time. Yes, they are definitely expensive. I’m not sure if I would go out and buy a whole bunch at a time again, but I am definitely thinking about going to pick up a few more colours here and there, since they have released new ones.
If you are a person who cannot stand lip discomfort, but wish you could wear coloured lip products, then these are absolutely for you. You may even want to pick up every colour. However, if you are a person that likes occasional comfort on a day here and there, and want a coloured lip balm, you might want to pick up 1 or 2 of these. I love them, and I continue to use them at least once a week. I know that it is hard to justify the price, but these are definitely more valuable to people who don’t have as many lip product options, because all of a sudden, a world of colour is accessible to you. I, personally, have not come across any other tinted lip balms that have as good of pigment for a lesser cost, but if you have, please let me know!
Have you tried these lip tints? What colours do you own and which should I add to my collection?
